Hello. I'm new to carbs and go karts so please excuse me. I picked up a yerf dog go kart with a 150 engine on it. It was running when I got it but he said may replace the carb if you want to make it run a little smoother. So I bought a brand new carb to replace this one get it hooked up but it's not getting any gas. I have gas going down the line to the carb, so there is no blockage. It started briefly with starting fluid but died after.

I check the float area and didn't see smell any gas in there either. I replaced the "needles" with the ones from the old carb after I cleaned them even and still nothing.

Any help on this would be great as carbs and me never did mix. X

I would start by dissembling the carb, then use carb cleaner or compressed air and start by spraying into the fuel line tube and make sure there is no blockage. Then do the same for all of the other ports/openings and make sure there are no blockages. After that, assemble the float assembly, use a micrometer and set the tail to the specs that are in the service manual, then set the float height by bending the metal tab on the float. You want to measure from the base of the carb (float bowl mating surface) with no gasket if there is one, and to the peak (top) of the float it's self.

You may also want to set the slide needle to the factory setting (clip position) for you elevation as per service manual. If you do not have a service manual for your kart, you could most likely download one off the net.

Another thing you may want to watch for is sometimes new carbs from china come with different pilot and main jets then what's usually in most people's factory carbs. You may want to just clean your original jets and reuse them in the new carb.

On another note, the slide needle may be a different taper as well. So you may want to swap that over as well.

Yeah, he could try that but chances are he will receive another with issues. I have seen this many of times with atv's, it starts running funny and people automatically think it's the carburetor, so they go on eBay to find one and they see a brand new one for cheap and think they are getting a genuine mikuni or keihin carb when in fact it's nothing but a cheap china copy with incorrect jetting-slide-needle.

I actually just got done rebuilding a z400 for my sisters step son. They indeed made the same mistake and I had to correct it by buying a good used example and rebuilding it. Needless to say it ran perfect after that.
