I've been interested in racing for awhile now, and I've always wanted to build my own GK, specifically one that resembles the design of a FIA GK. I just joined autotech at my high-school to better understand the small components of getting a GK to run. Any starting tips would be great!

Do you mean racing aka "just driving fast" and you like the looks of the racing karts? GK = Go Kart? I wouldn’t build one (like from scratch), I would buy a used frame and ‘build’ (assemble) it into what you want it to be.

Unfortunately, auto tech will focus on automobiles and the insane tech we’re living under and less on karts.

Save your bucks, buy a frame. Piece from here, a piece from there, and build your dream Bud. We can walk you through it all.....

I meant watching racing, learning about the mechanics of the car, what each role of the teams does. Not actually competing. (Mainly Indycar, Formula 1, NASCAR, and MotoGP)

GK=Go Kart👍🏻

For autotech we are learning small engine repair(lawn mowers, dirt bikes, 4-wheelers etc.) and just automotive basics right now. I know it wasn't gonna be to In depth with building things.

I was thinking of buying a frame and "building" it to what I want, but I would eventually want to build one from scratch.

Ooo. I wasn’t aware they still did that (start you off with small engines). That is very applicable to karts, of course. We get gray haired men in here that know cars backwards and forwards but are somewhat mystified by the single cylinder small engine and that old fashioned, black magic, analog carburetor. I guess you could say there’s a steep learning curve as it pertains to upgrades, performance mods and the myriad number of hop-up parts.

Hopping up a modern car is done via a chip or flashing the ECM.

Here’s an idea, tell the teacher that you propose you all do a GK as a class project.

I believe my teacher has a Go Kart that we will be taking apart, I don't fully remember what he actually said though. If we don't, I will definitely be asking him to do a few lessons on it!
