You could just try changing the gear ratio outside of the engine to include the 2:1 reduction as a factor an make the total reduction around 5:1 or 6:1. How many teeth are the current sprockets?

Not really cause then you have to buy gears and or a jack shaft.
If you can just unbolt that gear reduction box. and still close up your engine a #40 clutch may work with the chain you have. "may".
If so they can be found on ebay for 20 bucks. IMI auctions 303-833-0491

You local tractor supply company may have one on the shelf.

428 chain is the same pitch as 40 but 428 is wider and has more tensile strength. I think that 428 chain can fit on #40 sprockets.

if a #40 gear is the same as a 420 gear, I don't think it will work. I have a 420 centrifugal clutch and the spacing on the teeth didn't match up

If you can get a front sprocket with more teeth, you can increase the speed. This will decrease the torque, and you will need to find good middle ground for the ideal ratio.

i would need to find a gear with a 1inch bore and keyway that could give me about a 25:1 ratio..

You need a 5 or 6:1 ratio.
If I were you and you said you have a 420 clutch
I would eliminate the gear reduction. run that clutch and buy a 420 Axle gear and chain at a 5:1 ratio.

is the 420 the same as the 40?

It is not the same. but similar.
40 and 41 are the ones I believe are interchangeable.
Look at the chart. the roller width is different. So a 420 chain will not not fit on a 40 gear. But a 40 chain will fit a 420 gear.

i'm just not sure if my clutch is a #40 or a #420 all i know is that it didn't work with my current 428 chain. i don't think it has any sort of markings but i can look again

Cause the roller diameter is larger on the 428 so it wont fit down fully into the gear on a #40 tooth

okay so should i try and adjust my ratio factoring in the reduction or should i try and figure out a new chain setup with the clutch i currently have? the one i have is cheap so unless i'm sure or fitment, there's no use in using it as my platform

could i buy a #41 chain and it would work with my 41 clutch AND my 428 sprocket??

I think you'll be better off swapping the sprocket to #40 and run that. It'll take the guess work out of it. I don't know if #428 will run on a #40 sprocket or if a #40 will work on a #428, but I'd rather just swap the one off for a #40 and call it good.

A designer knows he has achieved perfection, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

yeah i went ahead and ordered a #40 clutch and chain this morning. hoping they work well with my #428 sprocket but hey if they don't, that's just a sprocket i have to buy. my current sprocket is only 44 teeth though so i'm thinking i will need to size up a little seeing as the clutch has 10 teeth. if i can run it as is I will but it may burn through clutches

if it's reducing speed or torque too much i want it off 😂 but i don't know if it's helping anything?
That's a wet clutch set up.... KEEP IT....
Pull out the governor in its entirety. Throw on some go fast goodies, and have some fun.
The wet clutch might have a reduction built in, but I don't think so. You see those on the higher power kart engines at the local kart rental places. Last longer than a cent clutch..... And take a Lil more abuse....

If you don't want it, I might be interested in buying it.....

it does have a 2:1 reduction.. but i could see the wet clutch lasting a lot longer.
