Hi, I'm new to go karting and this forum and I'm starting my first kart build. I was wondering if some guys know some good types of places for buying cheap steel square tubing?

Ring around steel shops, try and buy whole lengths (6m usually) It is always cheaper, also take your hacksaw and cut up in the car park to save on cutting fees

:wai: I buy mine at a metal dealer for 5 cents a pound and they cut it for nothing. See if there is a Metal warehouse in your area.

My local shop is Southwest Steel sales and they never charge me for using the chop saw. But then again I fabricated this from scraps to bring home the 20 footers

have you looked online??. i use a site called Discount steel. cheap prices. i usually just order the metal in 6 foot lengths so they dont have to pay a trucker to get it here ive gotten 60 ft of 1 by 1 inch square tube for a total of 45$ with shipping!! brand new too

What's the waal thickness of that tube?

I see one problem with that scenario: What if you need a single piece 6'3" long? Or, you cut a piece 5' long, what do you do with the 1' offcut?

Call around to fabrication shops or people who build gates and ornamental iron. They should have the material & perhaps sell you some 'drops' that are too short for their normal jobs.

im not exactly sure I just measured its about a 16th of an inch. but ive never used a 6"3 piece, that would be a very long, tall, or wide kart lol.id probably just cut 3 inches and welt it on to the other one if I really needed it though. and ninjazoomer3 I live in northern Illinois so I called and they gave me a discount. plus I know a guy there.

That's not the safest practice; if the weld doesn't hold, you spend time in hospital...

It helps to mention little things like that :toetap05:
