Need some get up and go.

Got the Murray running this evening. It has a 900series B&S mated to a 60T drive sprocket with 12T clutch. 15” rear tires.

It takes a couple seconds to start to move...them picks up speed slow but steady....then it ready picks up speed.

It’s a one wheel peel, but doesn’t spin till it it stars to pick up speed.

Any ideas on picking up speed a bit quicker?

Need a 72t sprocket... then itll be a quicker-picker-upper.....
6:1 is a start.. the modify from there...

I may have reconnected the long spring in the governor arm in a different hole than it originally was. Would that matter in my situation?

The holes are numbered/lettered. I think I now have it in hole 6.

Get a 10t clutch too perhaps to mate with the 72t axle sprocket.

He has #35 chain.. it's not able to just change out to a smaller 10t...

I am thinking the govenor is engaging as the cart is slow to ramp up RPM's and then doesn't seem to ever get to what should be wide open.


As for a moot point....the engine side axle spindle broke. Now I am looking to replace the axle...and not sure if I want to go the live axle route with this cart or not. Need to figure out the expense and tech aspects of that type of job.

No.. im pretty sure it the ratio....Often is that...
The again it could also have something to do with the broken axle...

We drove the cart around some today. Probably an hour total. On the long driveway down the vineyard we were able to get it to 29 mph...downhill.

The kids loved it. I was going to detail it out tomorrow....clean it up, touch up paint, clean/paint the wheels, put a few decals on it....

...and the chain popped off. In reattaching the chain I noticed the alignment was off. Pulled the wheel and saw the break.

Frustrating.

This is a 10 tooth #35 Noram arena. I had to cut the crank down to get it to sit closer to the engine, but they exist if you’re willing to drop $160 for a clutch.

Your problems are from a tall gear ratio, not your governor. Either get smaller tooth clutch, larger tooth axle sprocket, or smaller tyres.

Have the Murray back up and running. New 72T and 80T sprockets are on order. That should help with the get up a go situation.

I also had the broken axle fixed. Looks like the original bolt used for the axle broke sometime and was repaired...poorly. The weld had no penetration (you can see the oxidation on each side of the break)...so the booger welds with not enough juice were more like quick spot welds all the way around.

We ground down the new bold head so it would slip into the axle tube a bit and welded from there. Hopefully, it will be a bit more long term stable.


The kids took a few test laps and now we wait on the new sprockets.

Keep in mind of the sprocket OD to tire OD... This determine ho much ground clearance you have...
A 72t is 8.81 OD
A 80t is 9.77 OD
