Hi first post and I need some advice. I just retired and built a go kart for my two grandsons age 6 and 4. I used a Predator 6.5 and found on the first test drive that even with the throttle checked it still moved my fat behind around at a real fast pace. Much too fast for two little boys. It's an old fashioned two seater so any idea on a smaller engine that will provide them fun but not endanger their lives? Any info much appreciated.

Not really;
not without spending more money than necessary that is.
You could of course try a 3.5 flathead Briggs, but keep in mind that both engines run at about the same rpms;
and to compensate for the lack of torque of the lower hp one, you'd need to gear a little lower.
And THAT you can also do without swapping the engine at all, right
So, add a few more teeth to the axle sprocket and you should be set;
Oh if you happen to use a series 30 Torque converter as a clutch;
there is a limiter available (especially for kids)

With the 80 tooth you could find a 10 tooth Clutch and your gearing would be 8:1. Limiting your speed.
The 10 tooth clutch is a little more $ than the standard 29 dollar ebay special. But with buying just 1 part, and no major modifications it may be the way to go.

or you could just spend no money... and make the throttle cable open the carb half way.
Agreed. So few forget, w/ a TC you 'can' limit the rpms w/out damaging/burning up the clutch.
So, seeing as that youre running a HF212... up on the throttle cable connection area of the engine, is a screw w/ a spring wrapped around it. If you tighten said screw... the rpms/throttle are limited any further gain in engine created rpms. Id find the ideal rpm amount that suits your preference(s) and go from there...

Get you like 8: or 9:1. Plus what they said limit the throttle.
And now You have total control. (AS IF) LOL

Ummm....not exactly...see...that clutch has a step down to allow for the ten teeth....and that part won't go onto the output shaft, so....the gear alignment will change...necessitating modification.
EDIT: I was responding to the clutch, I missed the TC as well.
