I don't want to go gas, I want to build an electric go-kart. I don't want to be told to go gas, I just want suggestions for electric motors.

get a golf cart motor i dont really no much about eltric motors cause when i get a razor scoter or somthing i convert thim to gas may be a whinch motor

I know that golf cart motors are good, but I'm wondering about the motor and controller from my above post.

I'll have a look at what you said a bit later, busy atm. I can probably give you a bit of help though. I'm not that skilled in ev stuff but I know more than enough to explain how to set it all up and tell you what you should expect from it.

that controller should work with the motor. the motor says it needs 140 amps under load and the controller puts out 160 amps continuous and 400 amps surge. well more than what you need. im not sure how much power to expect from it. on this forum most people are used to helping with gas engines so im not sure how much help youll get. i know of a forum that is more into dealing with electric projects called "modified electric scooters" maybe they can give some more advice....

Look at this:

It means that controller cannot accept potentiometer which is the throttle in EV's, and it will not be suitable for electric gokart.
You need a controller which you can connect directly to a pot.

4hp motor equals to 4x746W =~ 3KW means a LOT of power. This also means that the currents are very high the the wiring and connectors will have to be adequate, and also the batteries will have to support this kind of power and will be costly.
Search for power EV on the web to see the kind of investment and labor and also knowledge needed and then decide.

I'm not 100% sure but I would say that the controller will work withy the motor. As for the battery's you might have to run it at 24v for the controller to work (not sure on this some one might want to clear this up) as the motor says it will 140amps at max and if you run the battery's at 24v you will only have 28amp hour which ur run time at max will be 12 minutes so maybe 20minutes at a fun speed.

If you intend on running 24v I would get a controller for 24v. Overvolting can be done, undervolting I'm not so sure of as the speed controller may get confused by a lack of voltage....I'm sorry for not replying the other day too. My computer wasnt set up and I was too lazy to do it lol.

This is FallenLeopard and my self's work from last year (plus the other team members who arent on the forum). It was for a schools endurance competition. Managed to go for around 1hr 50mins averaging 30km/hr

EDIT: I take that back, didnt read enough of it. Yes that controller is fine for 24v. This site seems to have more info on how it works. If you really have no idea what your doing when it comes to electronics I recommend learning a little bit of the basics just to help you get started as you will need to know basic wiring techniques and layouts as well as the calculations to make sure you wont burn out wires and stuff like that. You might want to check with the motor controller supplier to see if it will work. They may be able to tell you if you can supply them the motor ID specs. There are a number different ways DC motors are wound and they require different types of controllers.
Exact motor ID is the key.
