Building a go kart from scratch for the kids. I have the frame completed but need some advice and or pics. I want to make this a single wheel drive kart but I don't want to use a full axle. Anybody know what parts I need to do this?

You don't need a "full" axle, or even a piece of one. For a single wheel drive kart, you would make spindles (very much like the front) for both rear wheels to freewheel on. You'd get yourself a double-flanged hub for the drive side. The drive wheel gets bolted to one side of the hub, sprocket and brake go on the other side of that same hub. http://www.mfgsupply.com/gomini/gominihubs/8-10083.html This is an example of a double-flanged hub.

Here is a picture showing a simple single wheel drive arrangement. The engine side has the drive sprocket and a band break all on this side. The other sided is just a free-rolling wheel. Disregard the cave-man's foot in the lower right.

OK, I am back to building the single wheel drive kart for the kids. The frame is done. Spindles are mounted, seats built, foot pedals are spring loaded, 3 1\2 horse briggs about to go on it. Couple of questions. I only want them to do around 10 to 15 mph. What ratio do I need. They will be small tires on the back. Finally I am so stumped on the rear axle. Can I weld a 3\4" bolt onto the frame and still hook up a hub and brake system? And never put on a wheel hub. Is it just a set screw that locks them in place?

Cool. Post some pics of your kart so far. Have a look at this. It will give you some idea on what to do

As regard to gearing, play around with this speed calculator.

I worked out with a 10T clutch, 60T axle sprocket, and 12" wheels, you will get 21 MPH
