Need help with torque conveter

Hey guys I got a comet 44 series driven unit. And I nee to install the yellow reverse wound spring. Need to know how to take apart and put new spring in. From what I see is I need to lock the pulley on the shaft and spin outter sheave to relieve pressure and use a spanner wrench and break loose the outter plate and unscrew and replace spring the repeat steps in reverse for assembly.

If I'm not correct someone please let me know or if you have advice on how to make it easier.

Oh and I've read that most comets have snap rings holding them on but this one screws on threads from what I see.

yes, the 3/4" driven is threaded, the 5/8" driven has a snapring and key to fix the cam.

IIRC you have to slightly open up the sheaves (turn the moveable sheave) to release and remove the buttons, and you can unthread the fixed cam.

keep trace of where the spacers go

Oh, and remember to preload the yellow spring exactly the other way around. (uhm ..clockwise it was I guess)

But since the spring is held by the fixed cam (the part you thread on...) Uhm, I have no idea, maybe you need to press the spring down in order to thread on the cam, and then it'll be hard to preload it and more important adjust it to the correct torque sensing hole...

I'm not sure how that's been done *shrugs*
But hopefully someone else can explain

PS May I ask why you need to run it outboard?

Thanks. So your saying remove the buttons to be able to spin off plate. How do they come out? And reason is I have built my own frame with intentions of makeing my own clutch system like lawn mowers but decided to do it right and not rig it. And I bought the belt for my center distance before I realized this pulley is not able to run either way without the spring change. But again how do the buttons come out? Just pull right out???

they should pop right out with just a bit of force (press fit plastic)
be careful not to break them though.

The reason why I was asking is, because since you can fit the jackshaft through the driven from both ways, all you need is enough room (what's that an inch and a half?) for the cam to flip the driven. it wont affect the sprocket, or anything else.

Yeah it's bout 2 inches difference. But I have already made my jack shaft plate and all so trying to continue forward in progress and not go back to drawing board. Plus don't have much room with way I made read frame to clear chain to axle. Thanks I'll try tomorrow to get the spring changed out.

Ok guys I got the cam buttons out but now I can't break the outter can loose on the threads and yes I'm turning the correct way. Does anyone know if these are loc tighted on the threads?

Hmm..

I hoped gran had a threaded s40 he'd know how to disassemble..

All I can do is guessing I'm afraid.

Since there is no cotter pin nor other "securing device" on the exploded view,
I'd say maybe you have to compress the spring enough to unhook it's end from the cam.
The cam must be tightened down really hard to prevent it from loosening up
without a cotter pin or the like;
so maybe you just need more force *shrugs*

haven't had to take it apart yet (knocks on forehead) so can't help you there, put on a gx390, it rips! did a test run video, but blew rear tire off rim before i got to do anything spectacular, tubes on the way!

Thanks guys yeah I guess I'm gonna take it to work tomorrow maintenance shop I hsve a lot more tools there to work with and I'll see what I can do there. We got some 48" pipe wrenches there if that don't work I'm gonna be lost lol. But the spring is loose now that I took the buttons off. I'll let yall know if I have any luck on it tomorrow.

Oh.. be carefull, fix the driven with a matching shaft and key, rather than tighten it down in a vice for example.
For the cam I'd say a belt wrench will be about the least aggressive tool to use.

Oh, I read the original 44 partslist, and I need to correct.. it's the 8.5" driven that comes with the threaded shaft and cam, and while it is for a 3/4" JS,
the 7.5" driven for a 3/4" shaft is keyed and snap ring secured just as you'd expect.

Anyways, I'm struggling to even find a decent photo of the threaded cam,
the ONLY one I can find is from MFGsupply, and it doesn't even look threaded,
but it's not keyed either.. so either it's an unfinished part for the pic, or selftapping...
(or a shopped photo perhaps?)

Maybe we can see something that you missed if you provide some good detail pics of your driven.

You know anything around the spring & cam can be useful ..

Ok well I should have took pics when I had it apart. But the reason it was so hard to get off was they had loc tight from factory on it. I'll get some pictures of it up close when I get home tonight. For a simple pulley they sure are expensive.
