Well guys, I hate for my first post to be a problem but it is what it is.

I just picked up my kart today and while incomplete and to my standards needing much work it does run - but the clutch is for lack of a better term funky. Here's the deal - on pull starting it, it'll engage the clutch at a very low RPM, before the engine spins up to low idle even and stalls the thing. a push start alleviates this problem but at times the clutch seems to bind and kills the motor (somehow, I could be wrong - this is new to me). Either time when watching it, the thing oscillates/vibrates and makes almost the same sound a bad bearing would make on a fan motor or something.

I have no more description to give other than it's a hilliard extreme duty 3/4" shaft clutch. I have not inspected it for it being out of adjustment or damaged - because I have not a clue what Im doing on such a system - I'm used to idler pulleys and belts such as on all terrain lawn tractors :)

Anyway, the thing injured me twice - once when the throttle stuck on a corner as the clutch also stuck (odd combination) the motor stalled and I flipped it over completely back onto it's wheels - and the 2nd, once I got up out of anger to push it back, the thing pop started on it's own and tried taking off - even though the motor was on low idle.

I refuse to ride it at all or let my boy even come near it until I can fix this stuff...

I'd like to refer to Russ' post to try a few drops of oil first,
if that wont help, you should disassemble the clutch and clean it from rust etc.
then try again.

Mine did something similar, and i agree with sid, take it off, disassemble it, clean and make sure the bearing/bushing in the center is well lubed-greased.

If the lube doesn't do it, nor the cleaning, we might be able to safely assume that the spring(s) are shot.

Don't overdo the oil, just a couple drops. Ensure the chain has a bit of slack in it. If it is "tight", it will compound the problem.

For your own safety, do make sure you have a functioning kill switch within reach before your next shakedown run.

I will add one thing. if the cleaning and lube takes care of it, and it does have a bronze bushing, order a new one. It seems to me that once they start doing that, the problem returns quickly.

(sintered) Bronze bushings are mostly permalubed, so yes with just a few drops the problem will return fast.

But if you soak the bronze bushing for one or two days they should be as good as new.
