Need Help with Manco Dingo

Wife purchased a sweet Manco dingo for me (used) a year or so back, it worked really well for a period of time now I am finding throttling issues. I would appreciate some information on how to address it, I'm a kart noob for sure.

The Kart wont sit still at idle, it always wants to go even when I'm not pressing on the accelerator. So much so that if I want to ride it I have to block it with something heavy first. I did try to adjust the throttle a while back but I do not know if my adjustments caused the issue or not, I do not remember those changes immediately causing the problem at least. My brief research has led me to believe the torque converter is the issue and needs to be oiled or replaced, but I am not versed in knowing how to tell. Would anyone be able to potentially diagnose my issue? I can provide further information if needed.

TL;DR Kart always wants to go even when no gas is pressed, what do?

Need to figure out which series t/c you have, 20, 30, or 40 series. Most common would be the 30 series.

Some pics would help.

Most problems with belt engagement too early, is belt misalignment, broken or weak driver springs, rust built up on inside of driver (small pulley that mounts on the crankshaft), rust where the belt rides on the driver. Rpm idle speed too high.

Read this to better understand the t/c, it may be something simple and you jus dont understand how it works. Good luck.

Many many things can cause this. air leaks from a bad gasket idle screw turned all the way in to keep it running. a janky throttle setup will always do the job wrong. take the air filter off and look down the throat is throttle just not returning?

Thank you both for the info/replies, some additional notes

-I will try to find out what t/c series I have
-I will include some pics as soon as I am able
-Belt is brand new seems to be aligned.
-I did play with the idle screw a bit without knowing fully what I was doing, it does seem to idle fast
-I also replaced the throttle cable last year around the time this started happening

More info to come, thanks again!

Check the governor springs. The governor controls idle speed. They could be in the wrong holes, stretched or missing. The governor arm could be loose on the post coming out of the block. The throttle should be wide open with the engine off. When the engine starts the governor pulls the throttle back to idle position (as long as the idle screw isn't cranked in too far.) Research how to adjust the governor on your engine.

Disconnect the new throttle cable from the engine side, and start it up. See if it still wants to creep. Sounds like something is too tight with the new cable install. Most cables are not a drop in part, without any kind of adjustment.

Or against a wall. That's my go to.
That works but having the rear wheels off the ground enables you to run the kart and diagnose the problem better. You can watch the clutch or torque converter working, see if the governor is working, test the brakes.

Sorry it took so long, here are some pics. Let me know if I can provide more images of anything specific. I see the responses here, I will be evaluating and trying something2.jpg. Thanks all!

There's a 10mm nut on top of the throttle plate. Make sure it isn't too tight and keeping the throttle lever from returning to idle.
Super important. They come from the factory setup so the can run on generators and other fixed-rpm machines. Adjust it so it moves freely and resets all the way, but not to loose as it will wiggle around.

There is something else very wrong here. It looks like you are trying to use a 30 series driver with a 40 series driven. That don’t fly! That kart originally had 22” knobby rear tires and at least an 8 hp engine. (Depending on year). While that is a Dingo it was the bigger brother to the 285. Someone tried to cheap out when the engine blew with a 212. To properly straighten out that kart I would put a 420 on it then buy a 40 series driver CVT. That will get the running portion correct atleast.

certainly doesn't look like the correct belt for that setup either.

Do you think the driven is a 30 Series installed backward? How can you tell it might be a 40 Series? Just trying to learn something here.

Denny,You beat me to the punch. That's a Manco Dingo model 388. As you said, originally came with an 8 hp Briggs. You've got the original torque converter on there. That is part of a 40 series. That's your biggest problem. A 40 series driven on the motor would fit a 1" shaft. That Predator is a 3/4" shaft. Also, a 30 series driven needs to be run in the opposite direction. You need more horse power!!!

@Nodnarb, it looks like you have to fix the previous owners mistakes. It happens all the with go karts, and probably why he sold it. It’s rare people sell karts if they don’t have some blunder. There’s four basic reasons someone sells a kart; they messed up and are fed up, they found it in their barn, yard etc and want it gone, too many projects, or finished restoring and are selling now.
