Hey everyone. New to the site and hoping to get some help.
I just got a frame that was going to be made into a electric go kart. I want to go with gas. I do not know anything about go karts so really need help with how I am going to do this.
In the back it looks like the sprocket on there( if that's what it's called) is a belt drive. I wanted to put a predator 212 but know they are chain. Is there a way to switch clutch. Or do I switch the sprocket to a chain one. Please any help is appreciated. Here are some pics of how it is.

I should also mention it's not live axle. Both rotate separately.

^^ what he said. Also, considering the drive of most gas engines will be on the left, focus on modifying the left wheel sprocket. That looks like a pretty cool frame. Got pictures of the front end?

You seem to be missing the brakes, too. You could possibly get a sprocket and a brake hub for the left side, or sprocket the left, brake hub on the right. What did that kart start out as?

Thanks guys for the response. As much as I kept looking around that's what I had originally thought of. I already have the left side off so I'll do that. I won't have to change anything on the right correct?

Also do you guys know how disc brakes work. It came with the frame. Guy was moving so was giving everything away. Got pretty lucky.
I do not have more pictures I'll take some when I get home from work today.

Any good sites to order parts from. Thanks again

Hi thanks for the reply. Yes I just now mentioned it came with disc brakes I just don't know how I will apply them. Very new to all this. But I will definately start doing some research.
The kart came how it is. The guy said he was making it electric. I don't really want to do that.

I will post more pictures when I get home.
For the sprocket wheel hub, is there specific # of teeth that I need. I will be buying predator 212. I've noticed some clutch have 10t some have 12. What's the difference. I want to make sure I buy correct parts.

Typically... 10t is #40/41 chain, 12t is #35 chain...

What is the measured OD of the rear tire?... Not sidewall size...

OD-Outside diameter....
While on the ground or a flat surface... From that to the top of the tire..
Off hand looks like about ~12".

Hey so the size of tires are 17". They are all the same.
Also here are some pictures of the brake system and the go kart.

Are the tyres 17" from the floor to the top of the tyre? They just look smaller than 17" from the photos.

You will want to have at least a 6:1 gear ratio. That means dividing your clutch tooth count into the tooth count of your axle sprocket. The lower the number (lets say below 6) means a faster top speed, but you sacrifice torque. A higher number means lower gearing. You have more torque and less top speed. A gear ratio that is too high can be bad though and burn your clutch out. Its like pulling off from a dead stop in a manual car in 3rd gear.

If you have a 10T clutch, you will need a 60T axle sprocket. If the diameter of the sprocket is too large for your tyre, then you will need to use a jackshaft which allows for compound gearing using smaller sprockets to get the same final ratio

Yes from floor to top is 17".
Thank you that information is very helpful. So I will go ahead and go for 10t and 60t sprocket. This gives more torque but less speed.
The diameter of sprocket has to be same size of tire?
Again thanks for this info. Very helpful

One other question. I have been helping a friend with his go kart. The whole chain, sprocket, and clutch do not seem to too good. It's either too tight or to loose. He has 12t clutch and 100t sprocket? Is this the problem?

The sprocket needs to be smaller than the tire. Otherwise, it'll be hitting the ground. If you are only going to use it on hard surfaces like race tracks, parking lots, or roads, then the sprocket can be closer to the size of the tire, but still smaller than the tire. If the ratio needs to be higher (using a bigger sprocket on the axle), but the sprocket is too close to the ground, then a jackshaft can be used to allow a smaller sprocket on the axle while still maintaining a high enough ratio.

People were asking about the tire size to better understand overall requirements. Small tires can mean smaller sprockets. That could screw up ratio plans. Also, really small tires will lower the top speed and increase acceleration, and vice versa. Really big tires can strain the transmission(clutch/cvt).

So I have another question. Since i cannot really find something at the moment the switch out and put chain sprocket. How are the belt drives. Everything is welded soon can't just taken it off and add a different sprocket.

I would just need to put on a belt clutch correct and put it to the sprocket just like I would with chain right. Or is it a total different thing.

---------- Post added at 10:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:25 AM ----------

Again I am buying predator 212 so just want to know which way to go and what parts to buy. I'm basically at, just buy a clutch with belt that will fit the sprocket I have. ( if it even works just like that)

Or do I find a different wheel hub with sprocket for a chain that way I buy a clutch for that.
Again the original is welded or else I would have just slide that off and bolt a different sprocket. But it was welded.
Please any ideas. Thanks in advance
