I have a 16hp cone with some mods, milled head, air cleaner, exhaust, advanced timing and a bigger jet. I currently have an
enforcer clutch on it but I am wanting to switch to a torque converter to pick up some low range because I now have a
place to ride offroad. I was looking at the comet 40 series that
holds up to 18 hp, am I going to smoke this thing with what I am currently running, I would rather have something that could hold much more power than Im making. any suggestions on what to use, setups ect. thank you

You should be fine with the comet 40, people say they can take over 20hp, and I doubt you are making 20hp anyway.

what about engine rpm I have a cam that isnt in yet that will spin the engine to 6500 rpm with supporting mods, is that to much for the converter

Yeah I saw that hp rating but have read on other websites its 25hp on a two stroke and 18hp for a four stroke. I am doing the rod, springs and flywheel. I havnt put the cam in yet because I have been saving for the fly wheel, they are expensive.

Ok glad you are being safe. How many hp do you think your motor will make? You may be pushing it with the 40 series, even though they are virtually bombproof.

I dont know maybe 20 to 22, is there anything bigger than the 40 series, I read about the duster clutches but couldnt track down the driven unit, the driver was 200.00 bucks alone and they are out of production, I didnt want to invest 400 plus dollars in something I wouldnt be able to get replacement parts for it.

The only other alternative i can think of are cvtech torque converters but they are expensive. The 40 series may be ok, but I would wait for another member to chime in.

my vote is that the 40 series will work. remember there will be a more constant load on the engine now, so you wont get high rpm unless geared low.

with my 30 series TC on my mini bike, with a 6.5 clone, full throttle with the governor bypassed is the same as full throttle with the governor. even at top speed there is a drag on the engine speed.

The 40 series can take up to 25HP. When it comes to the 2vs4 stroke thing, what's the difference between out put RPM and HP? They may have slight torque differences, but HP is HP and RPM is RPM. Concerning your higher than stock redline, the unit should be ok with those elevated numbers. By that point the kart will be up to speed and the unit will have hit its highest gear ratio somewhere around 3000ish RPM thus converting anything above this into pure additional top end.

You might as well go with a 40-series unless you can afford that Duster converter model. I'm guessing a 40-series will hold up just fine as long as you have reasonable gearing.

Unless your engine mods include installing over sized valves and extensive flow work to your head, I doubt your 16hp will end up reving much over 5000rpm. A gx390/13hp has the same size valves as yours with less cc's. It'd rev higher with the same mods, but your 16hp will develop more torque and that's a good thing.

_____________________________

The different hp ratings for 2 and 4 stroke applications makes perfect sense to me. Most 4 stroke industrial engines develop their peak torque somewhere around 2500rpm when the clutch/converter is either still slipping or just locking up. But on the other hand many 2 cycles dont reach their peak torque levels until a much higher rpm like 5000, and that's well after the clutch or converter is fully locked in and can more easily handle the additional power.

The 500 series is the next one up.

so is the 500 series a better choice even though the hp rating is less than the 40 series?

So if I have a 10 tooth turning a 54 tooth with a cent. clutch and 10 tooth turning a 54 with a torque converter, the torque will have better acceleration but the same top speed?

The TC will have much better take off, and I think (don't quote me on this) that Comets have a 10% overdrive. So on paper, you should have a slightly higher top speed and greatly increased torque.

Ok well if thats true I could use a smaller gear on the axle and keep it close to my current
acceleration and increase my topspeed
