I've always wanted to try that with a kettler pedal cart, my only thoughts are with the narrow wheel base one would want to make it relatively slow.

If it was me, I'd find a way to make it mid engine and attach to the existing sprocket and drive train. Trying to reconfigure and add an engine in the rear, you might as well weld in a lawnmower rear end.
Just how my first attempt would be aimed.

For that kart, I would remove the pedals and crank, mount some footpegs, then mount some batteries in front of the footpads and an electric motor on top or under the front axle. Chain drive it to the rear. I think it would be easier to package, easier to make a slow kart out of (for kids) and considering the frame on that is one tube with a bunch of holes in it, you'd have less stress and maybe less flexing than with a gas motor.

Or... add a foot to the track width on one side and set the motor next to the seat.
