I have a pretty old Briggs and Straton engine.

I'm having problems trying to get the starter pulley back on. It's the band spring that I'm having problems with. I can't get it to stay as im trying to put the disk it.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

im guessing 1980's since it looks to old to be from the 90's yet it has electronic ignition so not the 70's.

give us the info stamped on. you can tell a briggs from the first 2 #'s of the code.

lets see that pull start.

True, but it would clarify how old it is if he wanted.

My clutch doesnt have a set screw, i didnt know some did!

As for the pull start spring, what i do is i coil it up with my fingers so it is small enough to fit into the recoil housing, and then clamp it with a vice grip. Put it into the housing, hook the bent end of the spring into the slot, and slowly release. Make sure it doesnt fly out. Once it stops moving, let go, and put the center piece in. Join it with the slot. Then, once you tighten the screw in the center, wrap your rope up, and knot it leaving a little tension so that you dont have exess hanging out.

Should be good to go, but i know they can be tricky especially if it is your first time doing it.

I have this exact same engine lying around in my garage, you're missing the housing to hold the pull start. You could find a parts manual online and order it pretty easily at a lawnmower place.

I don't really need the engine if you're interested in buying it let me know, it runs fine I took it apart about 6 months ago and cleaned everything

It is 1981 or older. It has points and contacts. It has a coil that looks like a newer one, but it dosent have the box on the side. I would put $100 on that it has points.
