I have a problem with my briggs 8hp horz shaft i would like to put on my go kart! i rebuilt it a couple yrs ago with all new parts, got rid of the points and rebuilt the carb new valves and guides, rod piston and rings, it has maybe 5 hours on it at most, it ran great after the rebuild.. perfect, it sat for about a yr, when i wanted to put it on my go kart. tried to start it and the d*** starter locked up tight, time for a new one i figured, since the brushes were in need for replacing, it had a 18 tooth starter pinion gear not very common compared to 14 and 16 tooth pinion gears, when i went on-line and seen they go for 269.00 needless to say not happening even looked on E-bay and could'nt find one, did'nt want to waste alot of time so i got a briggs 8hp vert shaft for parts, took the cheap route because all i was looking for was the flywheel and starter.it has a 16 tooth pinion gear! and the flywheels match up, when i check for spark after i installed the "new" flywheel and starter it was getting tons of spark! when i tried to start it, and it wouldnt start, it was getting plenty of fuel to the carb. so i figured it was the carb from sitting so long! when i took the carb apart it was still very clean! after reinstalling the carb, setting all adjustments to factory specs! i tried once again to start it and after a while it fired up, but ran very rough, did'nt idle on it's own, and was at very low rpms at WOT,and back fired every now and then! It still has alot of compresion, new spark plug, i removed the head, no bent valves and the valve seats are still in good shape, everything is still clean , muffler is free of restrictions! I'm clueless!! I have never in 15 yrs working on small engines have i ever had this problem before, i don't know what else to do!! I'm stumped, PLEASE! if anyone has any clue on what i'm missing here please let me know!! thank you!
