I just shredded a belt with minimal hours on it. I also noticed the clutch cover had cracked (part of the belt was stuck in the crack). I unbolted the cover and the drive pulley components inside looked fine so I just put it back on along with a new belt. The problem I'm having now is that it's acting like a motorcycle would if it was in gear and you tried to push it forward. The tires won't roll and it's very hard pulling the start cord - like there's a ton of compression built up inside - although it moves forward some each time I pull the starter cord. Could I have done something while putting the new belt on? Both pulleys turned as I was putting it on but I did turn them both ways before figuring out which way worked best. Or might this be a symptom of whatever caused the belt to shred in the first place? Appreciate any advice you guys have to offer.

Look at comet duster 94c diagrams online and pull yours apart. You could have screwed up the activator pucks inside the unit itself also like I did.
It should look like this right now without it running at more than idle speeds.

Hey thanks for the advice. Mine looks a bit different from the picture you posted. (See photos from e-Bay) I also found this diagram of what the inside should look like and it was all intact when I just unbolted the cover and looked at the inside. I just unscrewed the 3 bolts, looked inside and then put them back. I'm also including an actual picture of what it looked like before I replaced the belt.

How about the rear unit ? Is it stuck open by chance. If not you might have the wrong belt on it. And it being a little too short to work properly.

Might try putting jack stands under the rear with tires off the ground and starting it and letting it rotate for a little bit and then setting it back down also.

Here's a picture of the belt I purchased. It says it's supposed to fit my 1983 FL250. It was a bit of a challenge getting it on though. But I'm more wondering if the larger pulley is actually stuck closed? Shouldn't it be open to begin with and close to engage the belt when you give it gas? I'll try starting it with the rear wheels off the ground next time I get out there. It's not looking like this weekend is going to work. Thanks for your advice.

So it started with the wheels jacked up off the ground but no amount of throttling & breaking opened either pulley up. It's hard to imagine how the smaller one can even open up. The larger pulley at least has a large viewable spring on the outside. How does the smaller one work? More importantly, how do I get it off to take it apart? Do I have to remove the entire engine or can I just loosen some bolts to lower it? Thanks.
