Near new chinese 40 series sticking - considering a comet 40 or 44

BTW, mine is Chinese, just like yours and everyone else's. They work great. More reliable than the 30's. I took mine apart at least 3 times. First the stiffer spring kit, then the light weight rollers, then both at the same time. On my 30's, I've had them wobble ( the outer bell ) A couple of times. Each time it was assembly error on my part. Build it on the bench first and verify that all is level and flat. If you have a bent part you'll to replace it. If nothing is bent or crooked then there's no reason it should be wobbling. W D 40 is not what you want. It will attract belt dust like a magnet attracts metal shavings. Bone dry, or graphite spray.

I use an 18" crescent wrench to open mine. I'm sure you know to bend down the locking tabs first. Took some pretty good pressure to open it, even with all the leverage provided by that great big wrench.

I was afraid of that. I am going to use the money I was going to spend on wrenches etc to buy the authentic comet first. If it turns out the be a turd also then at least I have peace of mind knowing these things (torque converters) are problematic and need way more TLC than I thought.

They don't. You're having some bad luck I guess. Honestly if they were very problematic they wouldn't be so popular. I have 5 vehicles ( 4 karts, 1 bike ) and every one of them runs a torque converter. I don't spend hours and hours messing with them. Clean the drivers ( maybe ) once a year. Some less. You're getting a bad taste in your mouth for what is really a great and in almost all cases a very dependable product.

I get it, I am also on other discussion boards and there seems to be a constant debate on this topic with both sides entrenched and a few people who will have a practical, "they work, but not as good as a real comet". I used to import from China and resell from 2012 to 2019 and that bad taste has been there. When someone gets hurt by poor China QC, your company gets sued and the Chinese manufacturers are untouchable so I held the bag. Since this is for me and my kid I will have to err on the side of caution. It could very well just need a clean up and dry lube.
