Hi everyone! This is my yerf dog go kart i got from my cousin for free, but it was in really rough shape. Here's all the the things ive done to it.

Replaced the motor with a 6.5 honda clone from harbor freight
Replaced the driven part of the torq converter
fixed brakes
replaced chain
thottle cable
welded it twice ( because i did a sloppy with a stick welder one the first one)
and the countless times i took it apart to weld place a part ect

anyways to the point. my friend and i were driving today and we went over a huge bump and with his head knocked off part of the roll cage. so could you just weld that back on. And where can you get replacement disc brakes for this thing cause the drum is cracked and it messed up the key way OR would it just be better to repair the original brake set up?? thanks here are some pics

Is your friends nogin OK? :ack2: hopefully he was wearing a brain bucket....

As for brakes, going off of what Blaz has said time and time again,

1. A properly functioning band brake will work perfectly fine, although you could upgrade if you wish.

2. Don't buy band brakes from Northern tool, Look in the "parts for karts' thread that is stickied on the forum to find a website to order parts.

Yeah we usually wear one everytime we ride but this time we forgot lol. What fell off was already starting to come loose so his head didnt take to much off in impact, but he's fine. I made a mistake by buying the brake band and drum at Northern Tool and within 5 minutes, it burned up the rubber. SO then i ordered the right brake band and used the old drum. Worked fine until the drum cracked ( I dont know how, to much stress or something) right where the keyway is and caused the bolt to fall off. The keystock was the only thing holding that drum was the keystock and it eventually fell off. IT really did some damage the the keyway. SO thats why i want a disc brake system on the axle.

How fast does it go? I measured mine with my phone at 24mph, Just wondering if the clone made it faster? Also, I actually the think the band brake from northern tools is fine. Just don't expect to stop on a dime.

I measured with my garmin GPS and it said 30.2. With the old engine it went around 21-22. I can tell a BIG difference with the clone. It does not compare to the tecumseh junk. I tried the one at Northern and band was made off rubber. It worked well at first, then it ate the rubber away...

Disc Brake Replacement

I found a few diagrams on a different site that shows the brake band retainer, part no 04476, mounted. I cannot find one online so I will fabricate one. Still want to know if it is an easy swap out for a disk

I have the same Yerf Dog and replaced the band due to it slipping off when the brakes are applied. The new band, ordered through BMIKarts.com, worked for a while though it squeaked super loud. It now slips off as well. I thought to fabricate a bolt on retainer but looking at the mechanical disc caliper they look to be safer and a better option. Looking at the band and drum as well as the mount, with the left tire still on, I dont see an easy swap out. Has anyone swapped the band/drum for a disc? If so is it a direct replacement or is a new bracket needed somewhere? If so is one available to purchase? If not does anyone have specs as well as a mounting and/or welding point and position?

Thank You,
Lee

I bought a Northern brake band before I read that they were bad. So far it has been fine. My Yerf has a steel bracket to prevent the band from walking off.

If the keyway in that axle is messed up, you might have to mount your disk brake somewhere else.

Is your belt too loose? (Photo in first post.)

Mine looks very different from the pictures I put in the last reply. I have a rod that connects to a converter under the seat that converts to a cable and the cable pulls the brake band. The picture below shows that I must have a larger drum than the other pictures. Theirs is yellow mine is red. The band slips from the bottom so I am going to fabricate a retainer that uses the unused, reversed bolt and nut and one from the axle mount to retain from the bottom.

Its what I found and actually took the time to read what was already out there before wasting everyone's time starting a new thread for something already covered. From your post I don't see an answer.

i believe it originally ran a #41 but i upgraded mine to a #420 since it's much heavier duty and just slightly bigger
the clutch i'm not sure how well it'll work everyone on here is in love with torque convertors but i'm not big on 20% power loss so i'm planning on running a clutch on mine if it holds up i'll let you know
