last fall i bought a go kart off craigslist for $50. i bought a clone from harbor freight and then tore apart the tecumseh it came with.

here is what it looked like after a little cleanup! no joke!

so i took it apart a total of 3 times. each time it was to clean it up and try to get that paint off. it never worked and the paint looks horrible.

and it did not have a carburetor when i got it, so here is my home made manifold to fit a 8hp briggs carb.

i still need to make an exhaust, but here it is. i had NO IDEA that it was going to start. i thought i was wasting my time. all i got it to do was rev and die. then i remembered, i just rebuilt the carb today and and forgot to loosen up the mixture screws

started right up and went VROOOOMMMM. i had to put the choke back on or else it would have blown up. i grabbed my camera and this is the vid.

it really sounded like a machine gun!!!!

so i started this thread because now i dont know what comes next. i need opinions on.............

  1. what should i do to connect the throttle? there is nothing left of the governor. its a rusted mess. also it is made for constant 3600RPM anyways. (it revvs out of control, how can i restrict it to 3600 without the governor?????)
  2. what should i do for an air filter?
  3. what can i use that is cheap to strip all the paint off the block?

I would build a throttle arm to put on the carburetor, and connect it to a cable to the foot pedal.

Get a small piece of thin, flat steel shaped like a long rectangle. Drill a hole in each end. Bend it into the shape of the letter U. Weld another long thin rectangle of metal to the crook of the U, so you have the letter Y. Now place the U over the carburetor's throttle shaft and put a screw through the 2 holes. Put a nut on the screw. Tighten it down and it will grip the shaft. The stem you welded on earlier will be your throttle arm. Make a small hole in the end of it to connect the cable.

Seems like you do enough welding and fabricating that you should be able to think about that description and figure out what I'm talking about, but if you need a drawing I'll come up with something.

i have a vague idea. my only concern is, this engine races like hell when i take it off choke and 1/4 throttle.

throttle restrictor plate?

i want to keep it around 3600 RPM.
