I need help starting up a go kart project. Time is not important in how long it takes. I just have 2 options of what to do, but want opinions on what other people would do.

First choice: Build one from scratch. Buy everything new or gently used. Probably more expensive, more time consuming and more assembly work.

Second choice: Buy a used one. Fix it up to my liking. I like big tires, engine size isn't an issue. Just needs to be able to haul me around at decent speeds.

I like both, but there are reasons not to do one or the other.

Reasoning for first choice: I can get up close and personal on my go kart. I'll know the in's and outs of it.

Reasoning for second choice: Wont have to worry about getting the right small parts, unlike building from scratch. Cheaper and takes less time.

So any opinions on what YOU would do. I forgot to mention money isn't an option. I have a full time job and still living at home for the time being.

I'd suggest buying the highest quality (used) factory made kart your budget allows. Lots of guys here seem to truly enjoy the challenge of designing and building their own karts from scratch. I think that's great but only if your up to the challenge. Thing is unless you have the knowledge, equipment and ability to do a really good job, the finished product will probably end up costing you more and still not preform as well as simply buying high quality factory made kart.

I agree with that. I'm not handy with tools/welding and the works. I was thinking of buying a frame (brand new) then buying parts for it. I think I may have to go with you on this. Buying a complete go kart then changing whatever I think needs to be changed.

If you can find used carts cheap, just buy a fixer upper close to what you want and rebuild it from the ground up, changing what you want.

I know, it's been almost a year. Don't feel its necessary to make ANOTHER thread on this. I will be going with OPTION #2. I'm in the process of looking for used go carts locally (had a few, but they want too much for them). So, I'm just waiting for the right one to come along. I even offered to buying a complete, non working cart for a cheaper price.

I'll need help deciding if a price for a cart is good/bad. So, I'll update as soon as I get some emails. Thanks.
