since cumminsbayou4x4 was bugging for them i thought i would share. i own a 81 and 91 dodge ram pickup truck. i also got a 93 ramcharger. all of them have the 318. if i was to seriously get into some of the stuff i have done to my dodges so far my post would be enormous so i will keep it simple.

i like the 81. it would look sweet lifted. i drive by someones house who has one thats been sitting in his yard for 10+ years. i dont need another truck but if i did i would knock on their door! it needs to be saved, roof liner already collapsed its just going to fall apart

Sooner or later Id like to get a Ramcharger(or Trailduster) (with the removable top) and drop a Cummins in it. Put a bigger fuel tank and take it up there for the fishing trip. The chivy we had was a bloomin gas hog. My brother went up there for $6 with his 97 Dodge Cummins...

doesnt dodge have a contract with cummins to only use their engines? it would probably be pretty easy to do the swap.

i saw an ad on craigslist, a guy had over 100 running 6 cyl cummins for $600 each. im sure you would have to mod the front suspension to handle the extra weight though.

what do these old USA suv/trucks drive like? i've driven newer stuff like explorer, f150, f250 and a dodge ram but the old stuff is thin on the ground over here. Well so is the newer stuff but i used to work at ford so got to drive everything like that

they must big clunky pigs? in other words: lots of fun. haha

thanks. i wish i could afford another 318 vehicle but i don't have the room to park a 5th vehicle. plus i think i am going to have to do an engine swap or work to the engine in my 81. i think it need's some new connecting rod bearings but am not sure. i did find a 318 in Newmarket for $400. that was also an option.

i would love to get my hands on a 70's ram charger. i just can't afford one. saw one for sale 20 minutes away and he was only asking $3500

i don't plan on really lifting the 81. it is only a 2wd. everyone that levels there truck looks like a dumb dumb when they load the box full. if i could i would buy all the dodges i could.

Yeah, wouldnt be a problem. I think it would be possible to put a Ram Charger body on a 91 Dogde with a cummins...

What kind of gas mileage do you get?

i think it would be way easier to just stick a Cummins in a ramcharger than it would be to stick ramcharger body on a diesel frame just because of how short ramchargers are. plus you could get away with just sticking a 4bt in it.

my 81 gets about 9-12mpg and my ramcharger gets about 14-18mpg. i don't know about a poly. i have seen a few for sale but i don't think there would be much of a gain.

i think a poly is about the same as the LA 318 but the heads are different. it gets its name from the polyspherical combustion chamber. some also call them the semi hemi.

i have no clue how much power my 81 has. today with a little bit of rain if felt like it had tons of power. i can also get the tires to chirp on dry pavement.
my ramcharger on the other hand i think has 230hp 280 lb·ft at the crank. now unless it is wet out you never really feel any of that power since it has a Limited slip differential(both tires spin the same speed when you apply power).

Thats true... although the 4bt seems to be more $$$ than its big brother.
Ive seen the smaller one for thousands, and the bigger for just over 1k.

Either one, Itd be fun to belch out some black smoke that smells like french fries!

Huh, that 318 gets about the same as out 4wd I6 Jeep... Maybe Ill just have to resurrect one! A 360 might get about the same maybe a little less?

Kike he said, the Poly is part Hemi. The hemispherical heads make for better flow I believe. I cant say the Poly stacks up the the regular 318... but I think it would be fun to have something a little different, sort of a unique engine...

I overheard some guys talking about the newer Hemis... said something about them not being the same as the older Hemis... regardless... I probably wont have to worrie about it, I may mooch one of my dads 354 Hemis...

Seen a local add here for 2 Red Ram Hemis and a push button trans for $800, but we could never get ahold of the guy. I wish we could, I think I would like to rebuild one... just mild, nothing too extreme... need double digit mpg.

the 1st gen 12 valves are the greatest. you can get anywhere between 20-27mpg with a 37RH transmission. just imagine the type of mileage it would get if there was a 47RH or 5 speed bolted behind it.
