As some may know im new to the site and new to the karting world and want to make a petrol go kart for my 2 boys
The thing is i know nothing about making one :D
Ive had a look around the net and made a list of things i will need to make a fixed axle kart. If ive missed anything off my list that i will need please let me know

Engine ------------------------------- Got
Wheels and tyres
1 Seat
Steering wheel
Fuel tank
Front hubs
Rear hubs ( double flanged )
Drive sprocket ( about a 60 tooth )
Chain
Pedals ------------------------------( Im going to make them )
Stub axles --------------------------( Im going to make them )
Brake ( Thinking of using 2 band brakes )
About 8 meters of square tubing

Im going to try use the build method as the one on the home page to this site eg using bolts welded onto the frame for the wheels etc

Thanks for looking
Dave

I'd say you have all the main parts there. Just dont forget about all the small hardware like nuts/bolts/washers and other small items. I know i made quite a few trips to the hardware store to get all my parts! Also keep safety in mind as you are building it. Take lots of extra time to get the frame right, and welded very strong.

if you use a live axle, you only need one brake.

plus, you dont spin out so much and dart to one side.

In my opinion, it's easier and cheaper, but I may be wrong.

The spindles are the parts which the front wheels are attached to that allow them to swivel so you can turn.

do you have a frame yet, or is that what the square tubing is for?

(jumping the gun on this one)
On frame design:

Something to really consider is comfort, function and logic when you're making a frame. I've seen someone throw away hours of work on a frame only to realize the seat bracket is too short and the steering his too close to their pedals. Make sure you have a plan ahead of time.

best of luck!

I get a lot of my stuff on ebay. I haven't tried any of those other online stores frequently mentioned on this forum although I have seen some good looking parts on them.

I use:

http://gokartsupply.com/ (They sell chains by 3 foot instead of 10 foot. much cheaper)
http://mfgsupply.com/ (Have everything to build your own, and pretty good prices)
http://bmikarts.com (Very good site for hard to find things. Thanks matt1995)
http://northerntool.com/ (fair selection, though about the same as MFG)
http://harborfreight.com/ (Hooray for Honda Clones!)
http://jackssmallengines.com/go_kart_parts.cfm (about the same as NT and MFG but easier to navigate, and some different selections)
and
http://www.ebay.com/ (hey, it's the thrift store of the internet!)

miss any?
