What's the propane for?

The youtube comments said they compress the engines exhaust into that tank, then use a blast of high pressure to force the piston down when starting. Notice how he turned the engine backwards before re-starting it, he was moving the piston into the starting position.

How is something that big only 24 HP? You can get a 24 horse engine now that the size of a medium box. Has technology come that far??

As for what it is, it's a hot bulb semi diesel. This one is started with compressed air (sorry Ander; you were close, though). When you watch it again, if you look closely , toward the end of the video the guy in yellow runs around to the left and disapear's off frame. He's running to shut off the air coming from the compressor to the surge tank by their feet (the red one). You can just see the supply line coming to it in the extreme lower left corner just as the video ends.

It's not a true diesel; it doesn't use purelly compression to ignite the fuel. It uses a "hot bulb" in the cylinder head to ignite the fuel. Just like in a carberated gas engine with a lot of carbon buit up in the cylinder will keep running after you turn off the ignition (i.e. dieseling) only in this case, it's done intentionally.

You can't just walk up to one of these and crank it over to start it; you have to preheat the hot bulb first. That's what the guy behind the engine is doing at the beginning of the video; when he step's back, you can see the oxy/ace cutting torch in his hands.

The loud hissing sound you hear from approx. 1/2 thru to the end is high pressure air (could bee up to 300+ PSI) escaping from where the cheap air line get's rubbed/ torn by the flywheel as these guy's were makin' out with the engine. I'm guessing the small red can over by the torch tanks is for fuel for the engine.

It'd fun to have one of these, but they were never really used much here in the States. They were used extensively in Europe and elsewhere from approx. the early 1920's up to the early 1950's, though.
