hey now toystory im not like that most all my engines are ungoverned and im not a clone hater i simply dont own one yet and its no secret that theyre quality can be hit and miss. though i do get thinking about my gentlemen vegetables when my engine is screaming under my legs. Id be more weary if it were a clone. A stock briggs or tec will get valve float long before the danger zone. Surely your kids will love the bikes even if they dont have much power they dont know any different yet right the changes they get over the years is all part of the fun

No worries, Porsche- I wasn't implying anything, just stating that individual opinions are not shunned here.

Robbie- So far, the plan is to pick them up Saturday, so I'll have more detail then. Unfortunately, the weather around here is not at all conducive to riding a minibike (-5*F and snow) but you grab the deals when you find them, right?

It would. Snow only in rare places in south Africa

No, there isn't much snow here. Like fowler says, you only get it in rare parts, and they are like in the mountains. Our weather is pretty much the same as Aussie. I think they are a bit hotter in some parts though.

My OMB username is the same... I posted in the introductory area of Off Topic. I dare not get into the governor thing over there, I'll get banned quickly (pretty funny considering my position here, no?) Anyway, there's a sticky over there regarding the forum's position on the topic.

Anyway, I picked up the bikes after work today, and got home a half hour or so ago. I blindfolded the kids and brought them outside. I'm pretty sure they both need new underwear!!!

Both bikes run, but could use a little tuneup love...

TS, I have read some over there on OMB and really hate how anything that isn't Kosher, is the devil. I'm glad I found DIY GK first, because it's a much more friendly place. As I see more minibikes popping up on here, I want one even more. Those two were a steal, both running for $300!?!

When I finish my minibike build, I'm gona stick my modified Victa 125 in it (should be capable of over 10000rpm, standard flywheel of course) and post about it on there and watch heads explode.

Red, I gotta admit that I'm not real thrilled with that place. I guess I'm just so used to the overall attitude over here, it feels a lot tighter- kinda like a family (with your usual assortment of oddballs). Given what I'm used to, I don't think I'm gonna be there much.

Whatever- at any rate, one started on one pull, the other on two. I've spend a good chunk of today performing some maintenance. Clean and gap plugs, lubing chains and all bearings, adjusting throttle and brakes, clean and oil air filters, zip-tying cables in place, oil changes, etc, etc, etc.

Good deal. The worst of the wear and tear seems to be a few broken reflectors- silly really, as they are not street legal and have no lights- so who needs reflectors?

I'm really pleased with the deal. Last week when I found the ad, I had to deal with the fact that I just didn't have the cash, but the two brothers heard my case and were kind enough to hold them for me for a week- this after dropping the price from $200 apiece to $150. I had told them about my kart obsession, DIYGK, and the kids. The older brother made an executive decision to hold them for me, as "If anybody can do something with these things, you can!" So again, Mark and Patrick, THANKS!!!

theres also a lot of good people on OMB. they generally seem to be more safety oriented, and here of course safety is important but most of us really challenge the claims on billet stuff.

like when i chopped my baja frame they said i should have sleeved the tubing. yes that would be a good idea! but the fact is i have already done it without, not going back, i ran the bike today with no problems, and with an engine twice the size as stock plus torque converter it really puts much more stress on the frame.

that is absolutely nothign against them, just ive noticed they put a lot into safety.


aside from that... your coil is hangin around my room, i asked my parents for the go-ahead but didnt get much of an answer. if you're ready ill try again tomorrow, but if you dont have any cash right now than dont worry, it aint goin anywhere.

props to you for doing the tune ups... most people wouldnt go through all the trouble to do the many simple things! however i have heard that the doodle bug engines are much worse than clones, good luck with them.

Oh, I'm sure there are a lot of good people. Lotta schmucks too- big membership. But the impression I got from a few days of lurking wasn't very good.

And anybody who knows me, knows that I put a lot of emphasis on safety, no problem there.

To summarize- Glad to be here!

Back on topic- yeah, the engines aren't so wonderful. I'm gonna rip apart and clean the carbs (on really lacks power) and then take some steps to improve performance- especially at the bottom end. I have been reading that delaying the clutch engagement by a few hundred RPM helps quite a bit.

Well, it was SUCH a nice day today, I pulled the bikes out of mothballs and fired them up. As all the buzz suggests, they are rather overgeared for the power (or lack of) and running predictably lean. I did open up the jet a bit on one of them when I was messing around with them in January. Unfortunately due to snow and ice, full-bore plug chops were not at all possible at the time. I only opened up the one jet ONE drill size.

Both engines would benefit from a richer jetting, but the kids got to try them out and were quite happy. This, in turn, made me very happy!

Yuuup! Sorry, been watching "Storage Wars" too much...

Cracked into the carb on one of 'em today, while the kids were messing around on the other one and the Green Machine. I did multiple jet drills and plug chops, and the engine seemed happiest with the #73 drill bit (0.024").

It really did feel like I could go slightly richer, so I drilled out with a #72. Test runs revealed a power loss and a rich plug. Dangit! Just for kicks and giggles, I did a pull with that nasty, restrictive muffler off. Good improvement...

So- I pulled out the jet again, whipped out the old plumber's torch, and melted a teeny drop of solder into the jet- let it cool, and redrilled it again with a #74. The next two runs showed a lean plug, and the engine was better off with a wee bit of choke. I can't believe how sensitive this one is!

Yanked it again, redrilled with the #73, and it's pretty happy. Now, I just have to do the other one...
