That's what I'm working with. It has a live axle, but it's fully enclosed, so I think I want to do something with that if for no other reason than to save weight. I will also have to extend the front a little bit for comfort.

Can anyone tell me what kind of engine that is?
I think it's a briggs 6.5... I might be wrong, it might be a tecumseh. It isn't a huge matter, because I don't plan on using it, really I'd prefer selling it or parting it out...

Can't identify the engine, the pictures don't show any lables or branding. What are you planning on using instead?
Are those solid tyres?

Thats a briggs. Sorry, i dont know any specifics. Looks old however. You wont get much money for it. Youd be better off cleaning and fixing it up and using it. I have one that has been abused terribly and it still runs.

Ah.

I've found a kx100 engine with some work done to it (bored over, a couple other things), for $100. Can't pass that up.

Well my guess is that the clutch is useless. Any clues how to tell (I'm judging by the 10 years worth of rust on it)?

I'll probably build this engine to its limit, I don't really care if I blow it up, hopefully I won't get killed... haha. I'll probably just put $50 or so in it, I don't know.

I'll probably start by taking the engine apart, cleaning it, changing the oil, gas, etc. Let's see what I can mess up.

What kind of exhaust can I make for it? Can I just make a 12" straight pipe? I'm going to want to go with el cheapo on that one. I have access to CNC machines, can thread a pipe no problem.

Thanks for the input, guys!

19.5" wins.

So I showed all this to dad, and get this... I know this has been in my family for a while, but my dad tells me that this was a decent race kart frame when he was young. This was his frame when he was 12.

The engine is about 10 years old, its in great condition for its age (less the rusted exhaust, gas tank, and clutch). It's a briggs 6.5hp according to dad.

I drained the "oil" and got some white stuff coming out... All puns aside, what is this? Is it just 10 year old oil?

the exhaust will be difficult to get off. It's rusted on there pretty good. Definitely need a new gas tank. I might be best off going ahead and getting a whole new carb, too.

Good news, the inside of the engine looks great. there should be no problem getting this thing running.

Got pics of everything. This is actually a way better engine than I thought. Needs a little restoration, but it's gonna be pretty fun, I think. It has been bored 30 over. The insides look brand new. The outsides need replacing. lol.

Think I should replace the carb, or can I just rebuild it?

I'm thinking:
  • New clutch
  • New (lighter) flywheel
  • New cam
  • New valve springs
  • Maybe a new rod? (your thoughts?)

I'm not seeing a governor.

I think I wanna see 8500-9000 rpm. Any suggestions?
:cheers2:

LOL. If you wanna see 9000 rpm better be saving up for a billet flywheel and rod, forged aftermarket piston, head girdle, high performance cam, and more, and some professional machine work.

Already have a high performance piston, I'll have my new rod, flywheel, and cam in about a week, and the machine work has also been done. I think I found a billet crank, too.

So, yeah, I'm not too far off.

Although, I'm going to go with a target of 8000. Should be able to do this under $500, if so. Within 2 weeks.

If only I could have one month without a house payment!

the "white stuff" is water mixed with oil.

Should I be worried? It did sit for about 10 years. The cylinder wall looks great, no scratches or anything. Like I said, the insides are all in great condition.

since you get her tore down it wont be a problem. water probably got in there from sitting and getting water seeping around the spark plug or in the oil fill tube or condensation.
