my first mini bike

i started this just clowning around with friends i had a 3hp motor and misc. bicycles sitting around the garage, and wanted to make a bicycle with a motor. well after modification after modification this is what i came up with. kinda funny lookin but still fun to cruise around on. still planning on some improvements. one question i have, does anyone have any ideas for a homemade back brake. dont wanna sound like a cheap *** but the only money i have invested in this is the 5 bucks i paid for the spray paint, and would like to keep it all home made so if anyone has any ideas i would appreciate it.

You could make your own (crap) brake calliper by simply having 2 old brake pads(or one cut in half) connected to hinge with levers that pull them towards each other. You can use your sparocket as a brake disk, just make sure the brakes don't clamp on the teeth of the sprocket.

BTW, nice bike, looks awesome, I thought it was a factory one until I read what you said!

thanks for the reply. i cant do that with that sprocket, its not flat but you did give me an idea, cut a piece of steel in the shape of a disk and put it on the opposite side of the wheel and try your method, couldnt hurt to try. thanks again. any other ideas greatly appreciated.

actually i was just reading acg23's thread about chain tension and saw how he had that band brake on his clutch. i have a couple of those sitting in my garage and didnt no how they were used till i just saw his pics. but what do u think use it on my clutch or make something up on my back wheel.

Much better to have it mounted on the wheel, if your chain snaps or falls off then you lose your brakes. Not good. You could make a drum for the band easy enough, band brakes usually have little stopping power though.

this setup has been very successfull for me. i can lock the rear tire up!! it gives you the advantage of your gear ratio. you wont have breaks if you lose ur chain but how often does that really happn? i will be making a plate to bolt to two of the four bolt holes on the engine and then mount the bandbrake. the spacer works fine but i dnt wnt to break the pto cover so im going to change it. nice bike man!

by locking up the clutch and locking up the rear tire, you are only putting more stress on the chain, because it is actually the chain exerting the force on the tire to stop it, therefore making the chance of breaking it more likely...not a great idea

well just got rid of this today. someone traded me a nice 5.5hp honda engine for it. so now on to the next project. thanks for the help guys. extra info for the next build.
