hey guys thanks for the comments :D

brake should be done on Tuesday.

Today i found a bit of rubber floor matting and cut it to suit the floor pan of the kart. it gives some grip and covers up all the dints :D

also spray painted the pedals and steering wheel with aluminum coloured paint. Then put a clear coat over the top, it took away the shine of the Aluminum colour but i think it looks pretty cool darker.
Also put a layer of clear coat onto the frame just to protect it a little.

I got a sheet of MDF to make the seat out off i will probably just staple on some foam and material :)

If you find the right size rod for the bearings I can make up the spindles at school this week in one of my frees. Want the end threaded or split pin/circlip?

Not dents, fun marks

Do you realise how hard it is to staple into MDF? I had to get an electric staple gun to do it. Plus, it's really heavy.

Do yourself a favour, if you haven't cut it yet, take it back a get a sheet of ply. If you have already started cutting, get a sheet of ply. Ply is about 1/4 of the weight of MDF & about 1/4 of the density too; it's much easier to work with

You mean the front stub axles? I was thinking, since I actually have the hubs & bearings, I can do them. I also already have a 16mm dye to cut the thread

Yea, our school has all the dies to do it, however I have no objection to me getting a free period back :wai: haha

So i have had a bit of time to work on my kart and this could be a stupid question, but here goes

i tried to put the axle back into the frame and ran into an issue. exactly where do i screw the bearings onto the frame?
i got a video to show what i mean.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPoTm4NSu7k&feature=youtube_gdata

they are the exact size bearings as what where on it originally

hope you guys can help :)

Oh that makes sense I just copied the ones in the middle of the axle that hold the engine mount on because I never moved them, they must be different haha.

So just a little update :auto:

It's starting to look like a go kart now fuel tank is on, axle is on and starting to make the cushion for the seat and working out the mounts for the engine.

I realized that there was like no room between where the clutch will be on my engine and the sprocket. any ideas on how high to mount the engine? I know it has to clear the sprocket but is there a certain amount of clearance i should be aiming for?

I am planning to get a custom exhaust pipe made to route the exhaust towards the back of the kart if i don't have enough clearance for my muffler that is on it.
Just wondering if there is any safety precautions i can take with the pipe being just above the seat and there could be a chance of getting throw back into it.
I have seen some sort of tape on pipes, i just want to minimize the risk of getting really burnt if you touch the pipe...

It is starting to look good. I have seen some karts with clutches really close to the axle sprocket, like maybe 2" away. I would just mount your engine a little higher.

Regarding the pipe behind your head. Could you maybe extend your seat back up to make a sort of headrest

Possibly mount the engine farther back instead, allowing clearance for the clutch, and it would keep the pipe farther away from you.

Yea I worked out if i lift the engine 2" from the engine mount on the axle that gives me 1 1/2" between the sprocket and the clutch.

I think i am going to worry about the exhaust later, at the moment it looks like i might get away with the stock muffler and you shouldn't be able to bump yourself on it. but if it comes to it i will get a pipe made :)

Also nearly completed one of the stub axles on the lathe which is a new experience for me haha.

here is just a photo of the pieces i am going to use for the mount.

With the hubs from Fabroman and Jmans help of setting up the spindles i think my kart will be ready to roll in the holidays :auto:
