Hi everyone, new guy here. I have used this sight a ton for research purposes and finally decided to post pictures up of my current "kart" project. A few months ago my friend and I came across a power wheels truck in someone's trash and saw it as a possible "over powered power wheels" project as many of you have probably seen on youtube. As the pictures will sort of explain, the project isn't finished yet. I have included the most recent pictures and some design phase pictures. The truck will be powered with a 3hp Tecumseh coupled to a Comet TAV2 torque converter out to a 56T sprocket. I will post more pictures as we get closer to finishing. Enjoy :)

It looks pretty cool! Good start. If those are Harbour Freight tires, don't go fast, they won't be good. If your gearing it slow, you could be OK. Keep updating!

Thanks! Yes they are indeed Harbor Freight tires, with the current gearing the projected top speed is only 22mph (with torque converter 10% over drive) at 3500 rpm. The governor has been removed from the engine so I'm unsure of the actual top rpm. Even at 4000 rpm the top speed could only reach 25mph. Its unlikely we will be driving that fast anyways so hopefully the tires will be fine. Unfortunately it cannot be geared down any more without cutting into the already limited ground clearance (1 1/2"). More updates soon! :)

Were definitely going to fab up some fender flares, not sure about doing stacks because of space constraints under the body

Haha that would be awesome! I would definitely do that if cost wasn't a concern. We are trying to keep the total project cost under $200

Put a Yanmar in there, and you won't have room to sit!!!

With your potential top speed, I'd be really concerned about those cheezy dolly wheels. You're not going to want to hear this, but I strongly suggest you get rid of them. Odds are very good that they will fail- they are notorious. 22 MPH (possibly more) is actually pretty quick when your butt is barely hovering above the pavement and you have a short wheelbase and narrow track.

Having said that, this is a neat project, and I look forward to your progress!!!

:iagree: The wheels may last a liitle bit up front, but on the axle the bearing probably won't last.

I think this project is sweet! Very novel idea about how to do the duallies, I like it.

The main part about them im worried about is the tire life and the wheel balance. The wheel half's all slightly wobble when spun, some worse than others. I solved the weak hub/bad bearing issue by replacing the hubs with heavy duty hubs with high speed bearings from BMI. It took a bit of modifying the the wheels but at least the hub wot be a failure point. Honestly i dont see the kart being driven above 10-15 mph very often. Down the line the wheels will get replaced with something more suitable.

Guess what? I'm gonna tell you to ditch those wheels too. I suggest you look for some douglas/racing style wheels, they should end up close to the same dimensions & will look a whole lot better.

One question: Where will the controls (accelerator & brake) be located?

Wheel flares can be as simple as a strip of 3" x 3/8" rubber attached to the wheel arches

Why not just make it an RC cause i don't seeing that being easily ridable. then the tire wouldn't matter cause there won't be enough load on them to hurt. and you could make it one of those RC Pullers. it would be alot more fun.

I would get the better wheels if i had the money for it. Given than the wheels were only $3.50 each they fit our budget for putting the kart together. Plus its not going to be driven very aggressively. Better wheels will be put on in the future tho.

The throttle will be an atv style thumb throttle and the brake will be a foot pedal located on the right foot peg.

I had the same idea of making it an RC given its size, but the cost of the controllers and batteries would put us way over budget.
