My dads weird idea for greasing mower transmission.

Well are main mower is starting to slip gear. so he wants to grease the transmission. well i say we'll have to drop the rear end and open it up.

He said no we dont. so i asked him how he thought he would do it.

He said he would locate a place on the transmission and drill a hole and tap a grease fitting in to use a grease gun to fill it.

What do you guys think? could it work?

As long as he knows he won't be drilling though a bearing or gear on the other side of the housing

Also as he drills and taps he will get metal filings in the housing

If u have time I'd do it properly

if its slipping, grease wont fix it. what does grease do? make things slip faster

what do you mean by slipping? is it hydrostatic

No. its some kind of MTD auto-drive. i think its similar to a TC. whats happening is its loud. and going down a hill it jumps/slips gear alot until its eventually free wheeling. its got worse cause itll do it on flat ground if you let off the accelerator to fast.

if it is lacking lube then the damage is already done

id open it up and find the damage

if u do open it up take alot of pics
we have one that is doing similar things
but i had to come back up to work and never got a chance to look at it

Id love to open it up. But he wont let me. But i think that when he grease it and it dont help then he'll probably let me.

Sounds like my dad. If he was mechanically inclined and was repairing an engine, it'd be his way, or the highway. "No, Brandon. This is my lawn mower and I'm not gonna let you just take apart the gearbox and play around with the gears."

I would sneak out in the middle of the night with some sort of light and take it apart grease it and put it all back together and then show my dad that opening it up would work better. but thats jsut me.

If there are actual gears in there that are skipping past each other I highly doubt that greasing it will do any good, but maybe even make it worse. Since most of these mowers use bronze bushings I would bet that they are extremely worn out, causing a lot of free play in the shafts. This free play allows the spacing between shafts to increase. That increased spacing reduces the contact between the gear teeth, and increases the likely hood that the gear teeth will skip over one another.

Once the gear teeth start to frequently skip over one another the teeth themselves can begin to wear down rapidly. this could ruin the gears, and possibly throwing metal shavings throughout the gearbox, further problems. I would highly suggest that you stop using the mower until you can remove, disassemble, and inspect the transmission. If what I'm thinking is correct (I cannot be 100% sure) the transmission may already be ruined, but there is a chance you could get away with just installing new bushings.

No lube on this planet is going to fix that. You have internal tranny damage. Whether it's chunks of gear teeth missing, or perhaps they are just very worn, you have a skip. Does it do that in ALL gears, or just certain ones? If it's all gears, then it's either the pinion or bevel gear (input). If it's one or more but not all gears, it's the individual gears.

Put your money down here folks- I got five bucks on...

... Excessive bushing wear causing slop in the relationship between the pinion and bevel gear. These two gears are not in constant mesh and are skipping. Solution- replace hogged out bushings and worn gears.

IMO, let him do it his way &, when it doesn't work, he'll end up having to paying someone to fix it, then you can say "I told you so".

I know you're only trying to help your old man but, sometimes, they can't be told. Best idea is to sit back, ride the wave & hope you don't get caught in the current.

Its automatic.(but not hydrostatic) and it only does it in Forward position. works fine in reverse.

Its loud as you can hear. it wasnt that way till the Problems occurred. Could this be the bushings?

2006 yard machines 42" deck 20hp. thats all i can tell you right now.

Ive looked at it and it seems theres like a third pully. almost like a variable pully i think.
