Hey guys, i myself am not a go kart guru but i have an idea to build a go kart that resembles a warthog (halo). i plan for there to be no engine in the frint but have it in the middle and also have rear wheel drive. i have 2 questions
1. i know how to fit the engine but i have a 12 horsepower briggs that has a veritcle shaft, how can i convert it or directly hook it up to the rear axel. just in case you are wondering the rear will be IRS car suspension
2. what is the best way to fit the engine and all the gears below the truck while still having a flat bed that is not too elevated and a bottom that has nothing extruding from it.

Thank you and could you please spread the link around, i want to see if i can get in touch with people who have tried to build go kart truck so that i can ask for advice.

Research Jack shafts. This one is missing a jack shaft in that hole you see. But you can get an idea. Plenty of pics online.

To change your drive from verticle to horizontal, there are many ways to do this. You can modify the engine, add a ragb, or use a twisted-belt design. Safest way would be the ragb to assure the same amount of torque and no loss of much power.

if your using a car rear IFS from a front engine car, just rotate the center section (where the axles and driveshaft go in) up and get a peerless forward reverse transmission, comet torque converters and call it a day. if you REALLY want to have a transmission, get rid of your motor and get a rwd car manual (think 4 cyl rwd asian cars) trans and belt feed it from a horizontal motor. I have a vertical motor, I used a peerless 820 transaxle, it works, its fun, but there aren't many mower transmissions that will hold up and you'll need to get educated.

you can't have your cake and eat it too, rear mounted vertical shaft motor with out any up or down? mower motor is out if your serious, put the motor in the front and hook it to a manual trans and if its going to be big, make it with car parts so it can be made street legal later. you gotta remember, these are air cooled, so you will have issues if your going to try and pack it away out of sight etc.

if your SURE you have to use that motor, put it in the front, and using a riding mower belt layout to get it to the back, this give you room for a simple clutch, find a cheap (read as used from clunk yard) motorcycle transmission (like a harley) and output sideways to a flipped up rear centersection. you will have to make sure you can get proper oiling with it turned up, odds are you can't, but you can try. if you want reverse, a car transmission is the best option for a vehicle that heavy.
