My blog for my large go kart build

Well I have been making a blog for my go-kart/buggy I have been building for a few weeks. I didn't really know a lot of forums when I started but this one turned up in a lot of search engines so I have been reading a little here.

Here is a little background on the machine. I got a GS750 engine at a good deal to put in a four wheeler frame I had. Long story short that just wasn't going to fit so I found another large go cart frame for sale and decided to mesh the two frames together to get something that the engine would mount to but still be off road capable with rugged tires and suspension in the front. Going to end up being a really long one seater go kart with motorcycle engine in the rear, four wheeler front end, and a solid mounted live axle in the back to push the rig.

To read the blog and see the pictures from the beginning you will have to scroll down to the bottom and click "previous" and start from the second week in October when I started and read scrolling up. Have tried to reverse it so it would be chronological order but no dice on this free website builder. I hope every one enjoys this build and feel free to comment on the site and check back often for updates.

And a little bit about me, I am a recent college grad (go ECU!) and currently live in Greenville, NC. I used to work doing maintenance at a concrete plant and my dad is a mechanic so I've been working on stuff for years. Finally got in to doing some custom things though. Enjoy!

Well I finally got tires on the ground. Still updating the blog but for the members here is a pic with the frame mostly done except for bracing. Seat is still not bolted done but it feels good to have the frame done to sit in.

It is looking good. The length might affect steering. Have you tested the steering out?

Depending on the type of riding you will do, that thing may beat the crap out of you. Without rear suspension you will feel every little bump and rut the rear axle goes into. Here is mine; its a lot shorter, and the suspension has more travel and it doesn't ride that rough. 600cc Yamaha engine, and dangerously fast. Clocked out 110 mph in fifth gear, about a 3/4 mile drag down country road.

hm.. off road.. with that axle and kart/engine that heavy... at that overhang?

I'd say you'd propably bend it sooner or later (sooner actually )

Well I don't plan on much more off road than the dirt road that I live on and the grass maybe on weekends if I take it to some BBQs at my friend's house on the water. But I did wonder about those axles. Don't know much about what strength a 1 inch axle has or what an alternative might have been. It did give a strength rating of 66,000 PSI but that I'm sure was breaking strength and not bending strength. I'm thinking after the honeymoon ride there will be a lot of things I will want to change. Would adding a swing arm with some stiff suspension help to keep it from bending? I can easily change the solid mount rear sub frame to a swing arm down the road. Just don't think I want to do an independent rear suspension until I start another build less budget oriented and more starting from scratch. Thanks for the input so far guys.
