Anyone ever have to re-thread the handle bar forks? Idk what the pitch is, it's on a Murray track 2 mini bike. The guy I bought it off let his kids run it till the bearings literally destroyed. There is a bare spot in the threads, I wanna add metal to it and grind it down and re-thread it.... Or buy another used Murray track 2 and rob some parts of it.. But those bikes are getting very rare!

Huh... Could you post a pic of this? Just so we can see?

Also where abouts are you? I saw two of those up for sale in my area about 2 months ago.

Also what is a Doodle buggy?

I'll get some pics when I get home this morning. I'm in west TN.

It's just a regular doodle bug. Just a name I gave it.

very likely 1" with 24TPI which is ISO std bicycle size.
A thread gauge (cheap at the hardware store) can be helpfull to verify that.

I believe you're correct. ^ the threads will not tighten past the wear spot. I'm thinking if I lay a bead of metal across it and grind it down as close as I can, then run the die down and hopefully it will recut the threads. What are yalls opinion on that?

Pics of it as requested.

I don't do thumbnails. I despise them on the other forums I'm on. I would rather not have to click on a pic to see it. Scrolling through a thread to see the pics is a lot better IMO.

Looking at the pics, not exactly sure what you need to rethread? Shaft come up through or the nut on top? or material inside the tube?... Anyways, JB weld has a lot of epoxy products that you can supposedly cut threads in... being that you already have some original thread material left and not relying solely on the JB material as threads... It would probably work. Would be much easier than welding and grinding inside a tight spot.

Also, if the outer section of the threads is what's messed up and the back/inside threads are whats good... I believe I saw it on another thread here... there is a tap that you insert and expand to cut the threads from the inside out. I think it was for rethreading a spark plug hole from inside out. Would prevent cross threading if you start from the good threads and cut into the new material?

I don't know... just throwing out some ideas...

It's the OD thread on the tube. It's the threads below the nut where the knurling thingy tightens down on the bearing. You can see in the 2nd pic how it's not seated due to the threads being worn away from the previous bearings that were all busted up. That head set is new but the threads on the front side are worn down. If I tighten it down it just slips back up. I didn't have time to take it apart and get better pics. I'll try and get some today. They won't be thumbnail pics tho lol

Some people have bandwidth problems, and we have found you get more help and advice when people don't have to wait an age for pics to load. We advocate the use of thumbnails here

Sorry but I I'll not post up thumbnail pics. For the 1st reason the photobucket app doesn't have thumbnail option and 2nd I only use my phone for looking on forums. Plus I prefer pics without having to click them to view. Sorry for anyone not liking normal pics uploaded. Anywho anyone ever added metal material via mig or tig and grind it down for the die to re-thread it?

I haven't done it, but if you could take it to a machine shop to get it spray welded and re ground then you'll have enough to thread.

Just curious what other form of pic loading from a phone works? As mentioned above I do not use a desktop or laptop. On 4 of the other diesel forums I am on, photobucket seems to be the way photos are loaded and nobody complains or mentions they can't see the photos.
