Looks like there's a rod or cable missing between the brake rod and the brake lever.

It's a mechanical disc brake, as opposed to a hydraulic disc brake.

Anything you'd like. You can try to figure out the stock setup, but unless you're trying to restore to original condition for nostalgia or sentimental reasons, you can go with whatever works/is easiest for you.

A solid metal rod with drilled holes at the end would keep the brakes stiff.

A steel cable would do the trick also.

Just make sure whatever you use is hooked up solidly.

The only other thing I can think of is the brake pedal returning after you let off the brake. Does the pedal have a return spring? Or is there some type of spring helping pull the brake rod back after it's pushed?

I bet most hardware stores will have some strong springs that would do what you need. Just a matter of finding the closest length.

Worst case scenario you could drill a hole farther up in the rod to fit a larger spring. If at all possible I would try to avoid doing that though.

For me, I would install a spring on the gas pedal. I like knowing there's no needless wear going on. Having one on the pedal will help make sure the pads aren't needlessly rubbing.

How did you solve your problem? I got a couple Murrays for the kids for Christmas and everyone has different brake setups so the idea of two is one and one is none has been blown out of the water. I'm hooking up the manual brakes as we speak and am having to do some tweaking and twisting to get things to work. Just curious as to what your solution was.

Here is the caliper that I took off my son's Explorer before I sold it. There is a steel rod that comes from the pedal under the frame. The end of the rod hooks to the large spring you see in my pic. If I still had it, I would take a pic of the whole thing assembled.
