Murray build questions

Hello all,

First go cart build. I got a Murray Nitrox? frame for cheap and built it up with a predator 212 and jackshaft. Couldn’t find a way to mount the engine with torque converter on the old engine mount so I mounted it in the center with a jackshaft. Had to get a new axle because one of the rims was fused to the axle. I would have went with a new live axle but liked the support of the old axle throughout the frame. So far so good but had some questions maybe someone can help with.

I got a new seat with four mounting threads on the bottom that are about 14” apart and the mounting brackets on the go cart are 23” apart. I was thinking of using square tubing on the sides so it can be slid back and forward but am unsure what to use across that will support the weight and not bend (not the best welder but I can make metal stick together). Angle bar? Square tubing? How thick? Hopefully my pictures attached. One has the old seat in it. I priced out new cushions and got an entire seat for cheaper that has more of a bucket seat style with better seat belt options for the kiddos.

What lube is used with the pillow block bearings I used on the jackshaft? I see people using regular axle grease. Will that suffice?

Lastly the new flanged bearings I used for the axle are not sealed on the inside. The old ones were completely sealed. The axle they were placed in is sealed should this be a concern?

It looks like the pieces of angle you have on there will work. If you need to buy more 1&1/2 x 1&1/2 min. 1/8" and depending on the span maybe 3/16" . Regular wheel bearing ( axel ) grease will work fine. Also, Welcome to the forum. Lots of good helpful members on this site. Any snags, give a shout out.

All done! Gonna ride it around for awhile, grind off surface rust, and paint it. Any way to add suspension to the front of something like this without spreading the front wheels out more? Planning on adding a rack and pinion steering with bigger steering wheel one day too. Also I backed out the throttle limit screw and it goes way faster now. Can I use this to govern the kids speed by screwing it in? Can I back it out all the way when I’m on it?!? (Yes I know one of the v track treads is mounted the wrong way but it was a PITA to get it on and it’s staying until there’s no more tread)D364AF1A-CDBA-41D4-AB29-1B245EF7CB06.jpeg

Nice looking ridged frame kart. You didn't show is much in your 1 st post.
came out real good. Sounds like you have already answered your question about being able to slow the kart down for the smaller children. That won't last long. They catch on VERY fast. Suspension could be added to front end or rear as anything is possible with enough time and effort. My honest opinion is that it wouldn't be worth the time, effort, and money needed to do so unless you are a good welder and fabricator and have access to all the tools necessary. What I would suggest ( if funds allow you to do so ) is look for another non running, or poor condition ( inexpensive ) kart that already has suspension at both ends. About 50% of the 2 seater built have it. Much more cost effective to do it this way, and keep the one you have now for the kids. They tolerate the rough ride MUCH better than adults. I own one with front suspension only and three more
that have it at both ends. I speak from experience.

And that kart has the steering wheel on the wrong side for some unknown reason. Murray was weird like that. So to find a rh drive rack in the US will be difficult at best. Plus you will have to lengthen the kart at least a foot in the front.

Okay that makes sense. I can fab/weld but you’re right. I’ll see if this one gets used a lot and if so I’ll look for another.

I thought that was weird. In the future when the kiddos can ride by themselves I might get a new steering system and mount it in the middle.

K one more thing (prolly not). Went riding with the kiddo today and he had a blast. My helmet kept banging the top supports. I have to prop my head to the middle or lean out (im a tall fella). I know this go kart isn’t exactly for tall adults but any ideas on how to raise the support beams 6”? Or thoughts on just removing the two front beams. I was thinking some 3/16th flat bar with two bends on the top and bottom where they connect in (making four “brackets” to raise it)? He’s not anywhere near riding by himself so I’d like to solve it if I can.

Water pipe insulation, sold at lowe 's or home depot comes in various sizes and thicknesses. It will take a lot of the shock out of the collisions. Also Summit
racing, and Jeggs sell REAL roll bar padding. Thicker than the water pipe stuff.
Some 11" zip ties about every 12" or so and it stays pretty good.
