If you've ever worked on a farm and seen a fly blown sheep, you'll know that mulesing is the right option. The chemical alternatives don't work and are VERY expensive.

Mulesing is kinder to the sheep than having it's flesh eaten away from the inside by maggots.

Wow! I just did some Googling. Never heard of that before. The Wiki entry I found suggested it was more than just the tail. Looks a little brutal, but I'll be fair: I know bugger all about this, and if here in 2010 it is done, there must be a dang good reaon for it...

I had to google it as well; pretty much the same opinion as toystory. It seems really gruesome (but so does a lot of aspects of tending to livestock). I really can't say anything about it, seeing as it seems like an Australia only type of thing, probably looks worse to outsiders than those who have to take care of it.

Oh yea and IMHO i feel that it makes so much more sense to cut of the tail to prevent such a gruesome injury. Living on a farm i have seen it and it really hurts to see that **** aye, like i normally dont mind but seeing it for real just freaks me out big time.

yeah when u cut the tail off it bleeds a bit and they get over it in 3 days
fly strike usually kills and it is like a rottern peice of meat but the sheep is still alive being slowly eaten by maggots
