i would say briggs and straton. or Tecumseh. but a lot of people use Honda clones and like harbor freight engines

Get a sled or mc engine. They are 50x better than any briggs or tecumseh engine (especially tecumseh).

More Torque , rev higher than 3600 RPM , MC engines generally have a stronger manual clutch with a 3 to 6 speed tranny , Sled motors big torque , high HP , higher RPM , strong Torque clutchs ....
AS far as buying one look on Craigslist and Ebay or your local MC & Sled salvage yards or dealers .. Bill

as far as fun factor, its hard to beat a fast MC or sled engine, plus depending on where you live (sorry eagle) sled (my fave) are super easy to find, and ALWAYS faster than lawn mower engines. however, mower motors are a great place to start, I myself have a few with 6.5hp briggs (ones a kholer i think and by few i mean 2) so don't throw those out the window, but if your looking to rip the rear end out from under you regularly, plan on MC or sled.
