Better video of an earlier test run....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsYWjc0Kalw

Got a problem with lack of steering on all but very loose surfaces because of the live axle, I found an old plastic oil drum and cut it down to make covers for the wheels...

This made it fun but totally uncontrollable so I removed them and disconnected one hub to try out one wheel drive - that sorted the steering issue out but it pulls to one side when accelerating.

I've got an old diff in the shed, wondering if it can be made to fit and whether it'll solve the problem:huh:

Cleaned up the frame and gave it a quick coat of paint...

Thanks:thumbsup:

Got back to the workshop the other afternoon to the smell of petrol - the rubber seal I used to replace one in the fuel tap had decided to give up and empty the contents all over the floor, lucky it wasn't full I guess.
Have ordered some Viton rubber sheet which is fuel resistant to make up a new one.
While the tank was empty I cleaned the outside up and painted it.
Also added a 19mm bearing to the chain guard to support the end of the outputshaft.
And replaced the random bolts with stainless capheads.

Don't think I detailed making the guard or got many pictures of it.
It's made of aluminium, about 2mm thick, top section was bent round a bit of tube to form it and then bolted to a bracket I made of 3mm angle, mounted to the block where the reduction box originally fitted.
The side bolts to the top with another bit of angle bracket and to the frame with a slotted bracket as the engine is moveable to allow for different sized axle sprockets.

Test runs showed that although it handled the rough terrain the front end had a tendency to lift on the bumps so I've swapped the BMX forks for some MTB suspension ones, slightly longer as they're for 24" wheels, hoping the added length in wheelbase and suspension will help the handling of the front end.

That's the main problem, the weight all being over the axle and none up front but it makes for some interesting handling - accelerating hard the front end lifts slightly and the backend pulls to one side with the one wheel drive.
It's all good fun, you get used to what it wants to do.

one wheel drive's ok for a bit of drifting as long as the driven wheel is on the outside of the turn......

it is indeed fun time
but I can't help thinking it would be better with 2wd so I've been messing about with an old diff I've got.
Removed the ring gear, cut the bearings off and chucked it in the lathe so I could turn down the housing enough to fit a section of 4" tube over it, to keep the grease in, and the ring gear flange to fit the axle sprocket to.
Will be welding a cover to the end of the tube.

Just need to work out how to make the splines on the axle to locate in the end gears.....

Video of a mate having a go on it the other day, no drifting, just going for straight line speed......

Gave it a go holding onto the satnav with one hand, the other on the throttle so no spare to cover the brakes so wasn't going as fast as I could but it registered 25mph - have ordered a digital cycle computer/speedo so I can get a more accurate reading......

Nice job on your trike mate! I have a go kart live axle on mine, and I cannot keep it in a straight line! you will love it when you get it to the stage when it will throw twins not just a single peg.

And how many HP is your engine? I have a honda GX140 and its pretty gutless. I'm keen to get a clone engine on mine, but I have to finish my go kart first.. anyway keep up the good work!

Thanks:thumbsup:

It was originally a live axle but it had very limited steering so converted it to 1wd.
I'm thinking with the diff it'll still only spin up one wheel but at least I'll be able to skid either way rather than sticking to RH corners at the moment.

The motor's rated at 6.8hp - 240cc, so it pulls well but probably weighs a lot more than the modern equivalent.

Finished off the diff cover today.....
