Hey guys i have an idea for a go kart and was wondering if yall had any ideas/suggestions. this is going to be as low budget as possible. i love anything with engines, right now i am working on a lawnmower go kart that is almost done... i am exited about this project so i think i am going to sell the riding mower kart when i finish it(after i ride it for a while of course:)) so i have more money to put towards the cycle kart.
i want to find a old/go kart on craigslist and reinforce the hell out of it then find a old beat up motorcycle... around 500cc and put the motor on the kart.

my original plan was just to buy a motorcycle engine then i realized i was better off buying the whole bike so i can get the brakes, clutch, transmission, chain, sprockets, guages and controls/switches that i would need to make it functional.

i had one question thought about the gearing.i kno hearing with pulleys and belts but i dont kno much about sprockets/teeth and i was wandering what would happen if i use the motorcycle rear sprocket on the go kart rear axle with im guessing around 10 inch tires. obviously thats smaller than a motorcycle tire. so i didnt kno how that would affect gearing... make it slower i asume? that might be a good match though because i dont want to be goin 120+ mph

Although i kno nothing about motorcycle engines. i learn really fast just by taking it apart and rebuilding things. i knew nothin bout lawn mower engines now i know em like the back of my hand and can diagnose problems like its my job.

i am on the lookout for good deals on beatup motorcycle and karts

lemme know what yall think

thanks

The motorcycle sprocket would probably be taller than your rear tires. Depending on what RPM your motorcycle engine red-lined at, a much smaller 30 tooth rear axle sprocket would probably let the kart top out somewhere between 50 to 70mph.

After you get your motorcycle engine and rear tires, we'll be able to give you better gearing advice

im thinkin i will have to replace the sprocket already on the kart. that would never hold up to a motorcycle engine right?

Two factors affecting the sprocket- Is the size appropriate for gearing, and is the chain type the same as the bike's? Probably not, in both cases.

Don`t know if this helps but I just went with the stock sprockets from my motorcycle engine ,they were 14 & 41 stock with about a 26" tall tire ,now I will be using a 20" tall tire on the kart so it well actually gear it somewhat slower. The bike I got the engine from topped out at 88 mph , so I`m hoping for 60 to 70 with the smaller tires , :cheers2:
