I have a few questions for you guys who know anything about motorbikes.

I have a Suzuki EN125 that I ride to work and back every day. It is practically brand new with just under 5000km on the clock. I bought it new. I have been having a little bit of trouble with the revving of the engine since I bought it.

Let me explain what happens. When I have ridden the bike a bit, and it gets warm, it seems like the rpm’s do not want to go back down to idle when I pull the clutch in. It seems like they get stuck at about 3000-4000 rpm’s, where the idle is about 2000. It is as if something in the carb gets stuck, not allowing the rpm’s to drop. I can force them to drop by going to a higher gear, and then letting go of the clutch, as if I wanted to stall the engine. This forces it back down to idle. If I continue riding again, and then want to freewheel, the rpm’s will often again not go all the way down. They do eventually, but not quickly.

Could this be something to do with the float in the carb sticking (I don’t even know if the carb has one). If you need me to explain anything better, let me know.

I have also started noticing a ‘ticking' sound coming from the engine. It sort of sounds like a car would if the tappets where making a noise. The ‘ticking’ corresponds to the rps’s of the engine. It nearly sounds as if the piston is hitting the head on every upstroke, even though I know it can’t really be that.

I hope all of this makes sense. My bike is due for its second service in a few days, and I would like to know what might be wrong so that I can tell the guys at the shop. I am new to bike engines.

Thanks in advance

i'm assuming the oil's fresh and at the proper level.

the engine's OHC, so the ticking may be a sign the timing chain needs re-tensioning. engines differ, but maybe you have an external tensioner adjustment. perhaps someone more adept can explain if and where on your specific engine. i suppose it's possible this may be affecting the rpm issue, but again i'm not sure.

the high-r's...could be as simple as a slightly frayed (or dry & sticking) cable.

are en125 similar engine to gn125? gns do get rattly timing chains. I think i've riden like 3 and all of them sounded like the chain was a bit sloppy

My FZR250 would get a little rattly in the top end about 3000-4000kms after an oil change. Change the oil and it would be much quieter

So it seems like the ticking would be the timing chain?

What about the stuck revs. A dry thrttle cable would sound feasable, but why does it only eally do it when the engine is warmed up?

while crossing my fingers, i think i'd adjust the loose timing-chain first, which in theory can minutely affect valve-timing...which may be enough to account for the intermittent revving problem.
