you mean a cable barrel?

this is my "complicated" design, its prob not really needed(prob even slows down shifting), but i think its kinda cool. pivot on frame, rod going through pivot, arm welded to rod, shifting rod (supported like redsox said) through a hole in the arm welded to the pivot rod, end of pivot rod (or maybe on top) are two tabs with holes drilled in them, shifting arm (the one your hand goes on) has a hole drilled in it, a bolt goes though one of the tabs on the pivot, then through the shifting arm, then through the other tab to a nut, then you have a spring on this shifting arm so it wan'ts to swing to one side. this shifting arm sticks up through a metal box with slots on it that are in the right place so when you shift to a gear you pull the lever to one side, move it forward, and it swings into one of the notches. i have a simpler idea if you wan't to hear that one? bolt though frame, compression spring over bolt, shifting lever over bolt, nut, that goes in the same type of metal box as the first idea, and works in much the same way, would work good for an e-brake. i can make a sketch up if any one is interested/doesn't understand what in the world i am talking about, lol

Yeah, but I don't believe in buying tiny parts, I create my own o:

R97, your "gated" shifter would be lovely for a two speed belt tensioner system, but will not work on a bike tranny. The shift on a bike tranny ratchets- a sequential system, where in order to complete the shift, the shifter must return to it's center position. To wit- have you ever noticed that no matter what gear a motorbike is in the shift pedal is always sitting in the same position?

For those contemplating a cable setup, dual cables aren't necessary, you just need to get a Morse (push-pull) cable, commonly used on small car shifters. I picked up one from a Civic at the local u-pull-it to use on my kart.

unfortunately, it shows i have never bean given the chance to even touch an atv, or a dirt bike, and i have only driven a car (manual) once, sigh....., oh well, at my age ill have many chances to come. i don't live on a farm, so that doesn't help either. yea, if you got the tools/materials, build instead of buy, then you should usually build, just putting up a pic and giving it a name.

p.s. if your still interested in a drawing i might be able to make one on sat, but as toy story stated, it won't work for you.

The right way to make those cable ends is to drill through a short bit of rod with a drill the same size as the wire, then countersink one end of the hole. You then put the wire through and fray the end of it, make sort of a birds nest of wire strands which sits in the counter sink. Then you solder the birds nest of wire to the countersunk hole, make a solder blob so that it can't possibly pull the bird's nest-solder part through the rod. Then grind it back so it's a cylinder again.
