Warning!!! This is not about a go-kart/horizontal engine.

I apologize that this is not go-kart related but I'm sure this same thing could happen to a go-kart/horizontal engine.

This is an old, small, vertical shaft engine with no markings so I have no idea what brand nor what the cc's are. It runs for about 3 seconds then it cuts off and will not turn back on for about 2 minutes or I give it about 20 pulls. Could the carburetor not be replenishing fuel quick enough? Please give me your advise!

I hear carburetor issues written all over it. Possibly way too Rick giving one nice book and then flooding the motor.

Clean clean clean the carburetor and make sure to calibrate it too

yepp..

also: remove the spark plug and see if it's wet when it doesn't want to start again..
give it a good clean and try again...

you might want to replace it sooner or later (maybe sooner ;)) so no harm in buying a new one already,

If the spark plug is dry and tan colored though,
this might not be a fuel but a spark related issue..

maybe a leaking coil that opens up when warm, but in working order when cold..
seldom issue, but still an option.

So the moment it stops and doesn't want to start again, just after removing the plug,
put the spark plug boot back on and rest the plug against the engines case (head, crankcase doesn't matter.. not the shroud though)
pull the cord and see if you get a spark.. and again after cleaning the plug...
if you have no spark, you will have to repace the coil, the spark plug cable, it's boot or all of it,
a visual inspection might help making a wise decision ;)

Talking of which...
if you post a pic of the engine, we might be able to identify it..
if it's really old you might have a point ignition, which could be the culprit.
(capacitor failed, or the points worn out ...)

So first thing:
check the plug..
if it's wet and/or black: clean carb and plug , adjust carb and try again.
else check for spark
