as Tim the Tool man would always say, " We need more power". Iwas wondering if there was an easy way to get more power without changing the gears? any help is much appreciated.

remove the governor. i've found that I can't seem to blow up a briggs and stratton engine, but that's just my results. It's probably not safe, and therefore do so at your own risk and with your own research.

Otherwise, that's probably about it. You could pull off the carburetor and make sure that the butterfly opens all the way. You could remove the air cleaner/get one that more 'high flow'.

welcome to the site!

I am thinking on getting higher compression rings and maybe tweeking the governor.

You can always make a custom exhaust or even put like a vw engine in that thing. Know that would be crazy. Hope you get that thing running soon!!! :D :D

thanks for that. I hope to get it running before the summer. :) :)

Iwas also wondering if more tourque or more speed would be better?
i would be doing a little bit of hill climbing and a little of road running.

My Kart

my kart has roughly a 4' by 2' frame and i have 15" wheels in the back. a one inch live axle that is hexagonal shape. and other various parts.(most parts were recieved through a friend.)

I'll try to get pics asap.

I'll probably go with a 10 tooth clutch and a 54 tooth drive gear. using the speed calculator on this site, it should go around 30.

THe main thing i have to do is finish welding the frame. This could take a while with how fast i get to doing things.
I have an eight hp kholer engine with electric start (recieved from a friend) this should have more than enough power.

My spendings sow far is
aprox $25.00

more pics

my kart has most of the parts needed it jusst needs to be worked on. This task seems to take a long time. i can never seem to find time to finish it. any helpful feedback is appreciated.:)

The first one is of my axle that i will use and my disk brake. i will need to replace the brake pads.

The next is of some headlights i might put on after i have a running kart. it would be fun to have some night races.

The third is an overview of the parts

last is the spindles, these were from a nice friend who wasn't using them.;) and have some small springs for a little suspension.

I'm still wondering about speed or power? and any detailed feedback on my kart so far.

I'll try to get frame pics up asap.:)

heres an idea

First off, like everyone said....get rid of the governor, its running with shackles on. A few easy steps can get you going. An engine has got to breathe, with a factory air cleaner and muffler it would be like you running with a gas mask on, just aint happening. Buy an air cleaner (fabric type) they are washable and last along time. Factory mufflers are very restrictive as well. Worse comes to worse, get a foot long piece of pipe and screw it into the exhoust port.
A good place for parts is appco karting or american powersports

getting it going

heres an idea that all racers do. Pull the flywheel key out and advance the flywheel about an eighth of an inch. You can buy off set keys, just make sure the flywheel is tight and you will be alright. other ideas, deck the block, port the intake, surface the head, open up the jet and drill the carb high speed side, ream the carb body, get rid of the stock cam....I can go on and on.....

thanks for that info
i was wondering what exactly off set keys would do?
don't they just make the spark plug spark early. and is that very dangerous?

My next big spendings is going to be a clutch (for 1 inch) $50
and a new sprocket $13 (this will most likly be from BMI)

Should I work on the front steering or on the back axle first? I don't think it matters but I'm wondering what anyone else has done.

Advancing your timeing is not dangerous as long as its not too advanced. I took the governor off of my 5hp briggs and it was a noticable difference until something in the motor warped and it locked up. Guess I shouldn't have ran it 3 miles WOT...

I usually start with the steering since there are so many moving parts. I don't think that it matters though.

From your pics it looks like you have parts from a manco dingo. I salvaged one for parts a while back. I found that the brake was worthless on that six inch rotor. I bought a brake caliper and master cylinder from a susuki 125 dirt bike from ebay.

Thanks for that
I recently ordered a clutch and sprocket so i should be up and running before long.
With colder weather coming in I have found myself inside a lot more or firing up the trusty heater.
I'm working on attaching the spindles to the frame and then the reat of the steering and then the rear axle
once I have a rolling frame, I will attach the engine and finally the seat.

The clutch is a 10T 1 inch bore comet clutch
and the sprocket is a 54T sprocket

I now can mount that on and i am one step closer to a running kart.:) :)
