Stumbled upon this place looking for answers, glad I did. So, that being said, Hello folks.

This is my current project... The Monster Mower.

Mower was apart when I got it, no clue how the orig clutch works.

Couple weeks I will have a new welder so I will be starting my 2nd fully custom project using a mid 80"s Honda Rebel 250 engine from a street bike. which I still need carb, coils, and ignition(brain) box if any know where I can track those parts down. I will be strapping it to a live axle, I came across this site looking for ideals to build my own Forward/Reverse mechanism. or common gear box I could find/source easily.

Just got it all together today, had to go get right sized belt and put on a 1" smaller dia rear pully (5" now). Three letters describes it, O M G.
Im 31 now and havent been on anything resembling a kart since early teens. This thing is a death trap!, I love it. If I had to geuss Id say it could eek out 50kmph, 35ish mph. which is not super fast by real kart terms, but sitting that high, puffly tires, skinny wheel base, that is fast enuf. Its more of a getaround/yardwork toy for my small acreage. But now I am even more stoked to get started on a real kart/buggy.

Only thing I need to add to the Monster is mud flaps, I was soaked and mud covered. Also will need to track down a 2nd transaxle, current one is already a rebuild of 2 similar TA's, will be interesting to see how long this one lasts before I literally break the gears like I did when i first tried it with out a clutch :p

find a mower junkyard, look for a peerless 820 out of a "Garden Tractor" they have 1" output instead of 3/4" and usually require bolt on wheels, and the input pulley is larger rod diameter as well. these are designed for ground implement plows, snow plows, etc, WAY stronger. I have had the same one in service on my buggy for 5 years or more. good luck!
