Mini Glass-Pack Or Fart Can For GX-160?

Does anyone know of any companies that would make a glass pack or fart can muffler small enough that would work with a GX-160 Clone? I can weld, and machine an adapter if I need to, But i don't want a large, out-of-place muffler on a little GX-160.

I don't think there's a lot out there for "custom" exhausts. A lot of guys run open/straight pipes. Some folks adapt dirtbike mufflers and the like, and a few of us just fabricate what we're after.

yeah thats the nice thing about fabrication. what kind of fiberglass filling could I use to make a glass pack "filler"?

I've heard of guys using stainless steel wool pot scrubbers.
As for glass, I dunno what you can lay hands on. Normal insulation will likely just burn out.

Glass packs use fiber glass...hence the name.
Try burning reinforced packaging tape. The paper burns away, but the fiber glass remains viable.

They do, but I think they use a fairly coarse fibre. The stuff that we can commonly attain as insulation is quite fine. From personal experience, it burns away pretty easily, too. I'm not confident it would last very long in an exhaust system.

I am.
I recently had a glass pack rust through. The stuff that blew out was identical to what is used in fiber glass repair kits.
Steel wool will not work.

I've used Emgo shorty mufflers on tons of machinery over the years, they're about $17 each from Dennis Kirk. I think JC Whitney sells 'em too. Here's what they look like:

Not the standard, hardware-store mild steel. I refer to a very coarse stainless material sold as pot scrubbers. I'm reasonably sure they'd work. It's all academic 'till somebody tries it, though.

I was thinking of making my own sometime. Could I use a paint can lined with coarse steel wool and a perforated inner tube to keep the steel wool inside the can? I'd make a new header flange and extend this to the homemade muffler can. Would this kill any sound? I want to make a quieter muffler that doesn't choke the engine so I can ride in my neighborhood.

I don't see why not! Give it a go, and if it doesn't work out what have you lost? A few bux in pot scrubbers (dollar store, no doubt) and some labour...

I'll stop in and talk to my shop teacher tomorrow. I'm out of shop now that my kart is done. I took Metal Tech 1-4 and then 4 again to finish the kart!
