hey guys, sunny day in montreal

i dont get metal or where to begin to find some, i looked online for local shops and most of it is BS ( decorations and KFC popped out :S). and then i asked my neighboor and he said "do you want metal? or building metal ? like you find in houses" ... idk wtf he was talkin about .
Just looking for metal isnt my thing, and the closest place is like 30 km away, beside car scrap yard which all the scrap yard i know .. and i dont think they can help me with metal tubing

so i found this

I had a somewhat similar issue when i started, the cheapest metal i found is from scrapyards/ junk yards where you can just go in pick up scarps and pay for the weight, i got most of the angled iron i needed as well as an engine for 10 USD. Also not very widely known here in the US is that home-goods stores such as Homedepo/Lowes/Homecenter, sell individual pieces but are usually more expensive. My last option here would be to Google/local directory your local Welding equipment and supply store they will definitively point you in the right direction (as they were the ones that pointed to me to my local scrap yard)

You should really do some research on different types of alloys. both Steel and Aluminum are alloys. Many people confuse the term alloy as aluminum only.

There are many different types of blends of metals. They all serve different purposes whether it is a super stiff structural steel or a flexy spring steel. Or if you want any combination of the two you have to find the specific blend that suits your needs.

we have homedepot here and all that and ive been there found alot of stuff but no metal. u think they'll guide me if i ask knowing that got nothing ? lol

and what do you think fits best a gokart ? what kind of stuff i should be lookin at over there ? like type of steel, thinckness .. all those details

p.s. do they really sell metal tubing and metal sheets in scrap yard ? i dont want stoves and fridges lol

Look well into the hardware isle of homedepo where they have the long threaded rods they should have the squared tubing angled iron and other metals there. But obviously asking them would not hurt your chances of finding what you are looking for.

1X1 inch angled iron (usually 1/8" thick) has worked VERY well for me. Most people on the forum recommend squared tubing of the same size. I would stay away from aluminum since the skill and tools required to cut and weld it is no laughing matter

People scrap all sorts of stuff.

Just make sure you test it all, inspect it all, check for rusting, etc.

Dont build carts out of swingset material. You will die a horrible, gory, greasy death when it caves in and skewers you in a minor rollover or something.

Build a vehicle that will survive a full speed death roll. Nothing less.

I cringe every time I see some mangled contraption built out of square tubing and angled butt welds. For God's sake, dont build a roll cage out of that stuff.

When you are searching the web and phone book and asking people questions, your keyword is "Steel", or to even more specific, "structural steel". Metal is too generic a term.

Do NOT buy steel at a hardware store. It's easily 3-4X more expensive and the available dimensions are very limited.

go to homedepo and find the gas and water lines and u can use black iron pipe but go with3/4 it works the best and it bend really well

Honestly, Sch40 gas pipe is not a great choice for material. It's quite thick and heavy for what it is, and you can do a LOT better for pricing...

thanks for the help guys, Toystory thanks for that search, i did that early i just didnt know if i was on the right track or not... i'll try theseplaces in the yellopages, if not, then i'll just order online, its really cheap

Also check around and see if there are any machine shops/ tool and die shops in your area if there are ask where they buy there materiels they may even have some left over suff that you can buy from them. I work at a tool shop and a lot of times we have what I need.
