hey everyone, just thought I'd toss in a quick hello.

I just picked up three go-karts from a guy I work with.

2 of em are the old Manco dingos, 286 models?

and the other one, well, im still trying to figure specificaly what it is.
its just like the dingos, but slightly bigger, and few slight differences with the frame design etc.

same engine though.. lol all 5hp (or 5.5hp?) tachsume

at any rate, i picked up all 3 for 600$

they're in somewhat rough condition, but totaly fixable with a few parts.

I was told it would be simplest to use the one dingo to fix the other.

they all need a little, or a lot of TLC.

mostly its chain, belts, TC and CLutch related things.

on one of the dingos the clutch grenaded for example.

however, i have a top secret wepon that should allow me to have all three up n running again.

-the inlaws happen to have an un-used 440 sled engine sittin freshly rebuilt in thier garage with no purpose to it.

where better place to use it..??? hehe

its goan be awhile and a bit of work to get em all running, but meh.

also for the 600$ i got new nerf kit (Foam kit for the bars) and a brand new chain and link.

the guy also has a new engine he'll sell for 100$ but dont think i'll need or realy want it.. atm..

the idea is, i have two boys, one 6yrs old, and another 1.5yrs.. (And a new one comming in january lol)

it'll give us all somethign to play on.

where i live there are miles and miles and MILES of trails designated for atvs/bikes/etc etc

I actualy have 92 warrior 350, but the last ride out something went bad inside the engine.. I just cant be bothered to rip into that thing again anytime soon.

I figured these carts, although slower, less powerfull, etc etc, would be complete blast to go play around on!!

I wouldnt mind beefing one up, re-working it to include a suspension and all that fun stuff, make a nice little offroading kart outta her, but meh, no rush on that.. lol

anyways, thats the scoop that brings me here :D

Pics:

juat unloaded, gotta make some space in my garage now.. dnt know how im gonna do that with the project car/engine/the quad etc etc etc etc.. lol

hope ya all enjoy! :D

EDIT:

quick correction.. i was just out loading one up.. gotta go to the inlaws for halloween n all that, so figured i'd take one with me to tinker on, (Picked the one that appears to have the best chance of running.. lol)

at anyrate, they are 6hp engines..
:D

That was a steal. They look to be in great shape. Take the biggest and drop in that 440 and add suspension and make it yours and then keep the other 2, with governors intact, for the boys to play with. If you can get that 440 for free, you'll have one beast of kart built for a great price. By the way, can you send some snow south?

you can come and take all the snow you want!
just a skiff of it the other day lol.. it sends this sorta impending sense of doom of winter.. lol

as it is, we happend to go to the inlaws so the ole lady could take the kidlets trick or treating in her home town...

got the little purple cart runnin, after a bit of tinkierin and freeing up the float etc.
looks like its the one that needs the proper chain put on..lol
and the clutch or TC is sticking or needs adjusted or something, as the wheels wont stop spinning at idle.. (I had it up on a block and butted against the back of my truck box while tinkering. aside from that, need a new throttle cable if i cant free/lube htis one up as it sticks.

also, when i came home, i happend to have a sled engine in the truck with it.. hehe

it turns out its a 436 CC Kawasaki engine.
Pulled the model number n etc off it, and research is about to begin. :D

now just to clarify, the belt driven part on the engine shaft is the centrifical clutch, and the part that is driven by the belt with the chain sprocket on it is the TC (Torque convertor correct?)

i think the only real hassle i may have is to find a different TC to fit the belt size to match up with the sled engine.

but i think once i figure out what it is outta etc, I can prolly make relatively short work of that issue.

the engine comes withthe carb, coils and a couple wires hanging outta it..

it used to have a starter, but thats missing. it has tug rope on her though, so i may just put a cover over the starter hole and call it good.. or at least for now.. lol

all I need to figure out is what the 3-4-5 or so wires go to.. I presume 2 of em are for a battery, and likely one for a kill switch.

I can only hole its that simple and i dont need to track down anything liek ignition modual/cdi box or some such thing.. lol

at any rate, i will kinow all of this soon enough :devil2:

toystorey: glad to see im not the only poor sap thats gotta suffer through it!

I was thinking how hard would it be to adapt a track and tss some skiis on one of the karts for some winter fun... since im already gona slam a snowmobile engine in one, it should be able to handle turnin a track n all that as well.. hehe

but thats an idea beyond the scope of my current ambitions. lol

i perfer to stay where its warm inthe winter months.. lol

The torque converter is both the belt driver in the motor and the other piece that the belt goes to. A centrifugal clutch is a single small unit that goes in the motor and has its own sprocket and that engages when high enough rpms are reached that the inner pads move outwards and grab onto the shell spinning the sprocket. A google image search of each will clear things up better than words. The snow mobile probably has an oversized torque converter as its output as most, if not all, do. A nice picture of your motor and TC would really help with diagnosing why it stays engaged.

yes, i have been looking at pics and vids etc all over the place...
Im not so sure they have TCs or at least not like the comet ones.. although i know on the one for sure, the clutch part says comet on it.

I finished up in the dark n all that, and didnt grab the engine till just before i left.

still loaded in the truck, i'll have em at the shop tommorrow.

after reading a sticky regarding cleaning the clutch etc, i think that would be a smart place for me to start as well as replacing the fuel line and cleaing the carb.. should do wonders.
Change the chain and go from there.

as for the engine i have narrowed it down to being a 2 stroke 440 articat engine (Made by kawasaki lmao) that came on the Panther, and Puma I. I had the years of each narrowed down as well, but forgot.

looks like i will prolly need a regulator, although that may only be neccessary for charging purposes for a battery or for lights and such, but still not 100% certain.. lol and depending on the year, may need a cdi box as well, but the way it looks, i dont think i will.
its a model TIA440S1 kawasaki 440, and interestingly it can provide 75watts at 12volts for lights.. Yaay me! lol
(I know where i can get some super bright high intesity LED lights lol (VisionX))

also gona need the rest of the exahust, the "Can" part of it. dont care to blow up a freshly rebuilt engine, free or not..lol.
although I'll likely end up doing some work on the inlaws vehicles in exchange.. lol

as it is, once i get a few more details on things, i think i'll work on finding a scrapped panther to swipe some parts off of.

I know my unckle sed to have a bunch of old panthers and cheetahs etc, doubt he still ahs em, but who knows. he was always a pack rat.. lol

it looks like it'll be pretty slick and simple to fab up hook in the engine once I get all the tidbits together.

now the big kart, on its little ID plate/sticker thingy says,
Carter Bros
Model# 1736-3015

I have found stuff regarding either number, but i cant find any machine that looks like this one..
the key part being, this is a single seater, and all the carter bros units i have found pics n vids of are 2 seaters.. lol

this one looks pretty much like the little dingos, just slightly diferent in some parts of the frame etc.

the motors, driveline, all that look the same..

but anyways, i shall upload some good pics to show everything im talking about tommorrow when i get a chance.. lol

and thanks everyone for the help!
:D

If the unit on the motor shaft has teeth then it is a centrifugal clutch. If it's a belt to another part, it's a torque converter.

torque converters they are then.. lol
and i got the one engine running good today.. new hoses, rerouted, tinkerd with the throttle linkages a bit, got it to idle, all this of course after cleaning the hell outt at the carb.. had some wierd greenish buildup cruddy stuff in the bottom of the float bowl and well, everywhere else.. lol

I prolly woulda had the new chain etc on it as well, however the boss over worked my butt today and i was already pushing 12 hrs of me being at the shop, so to heck with it.. no rush..

sorry no pics.. lol im just too sore and tired.. and i left the engine at work along with the kart cuz i was just too tired to load em back up, have em bouncing around the box etc etc... lol

ya know, it would be nice if more than one engine had a recoil on it?

on a side note, I cleaned up my garage and made space for the karts... for some reason, the recoil is missing off one of mydang lawn mowers!!!
(And no, i never took it off, and its totaly unrelated to the Karts!!! what the... ????)

lol, on the cart with no recoil just get a rope and use the wrap-and-pull method to start them. never fails!

hehe.. i was thinking that too.. and theres one re-col, three engines.. lol..

id prolly use a rope on the kart I already got running, and swap the recoil off it to the other ones tho, but meh.. same difference...

when i was kid I got this odl go-kart some one built. it was completely built outta galvanized? water piping, all threaded together.. 90s for the corners, T pieces for where needed.. even the front spindles where made with it.
then what i belive to be a rototiller gearbox/drivetrain kinda thing..

but it had a huge engine! and it had a thing on the one side to wrap a rope around..

I dont know WTF buddy was doing one day, but there i was sitting on it, waiting for him to start it, and he wrapped like a mile of rope around it.. he pulled, then it started and pulled him back!!! (He didnt get the rope pulled free!)

luckily he hadnt wound it too hard around his hand and manages to let go..

now picture a tall *** guy like me on a small kart, knees out to the sides.. now i got this rope whipping my leg with every revolution of the engine! SON-Of-A--- it HURT!! it stung like hell.. so I bailed...

now this thing didnt have the greates of stopping abilities.. it was a belt to the driven pully, with a tensioner pully linked to the pedal.. push it engage...

this thing didnt go very fast.. but when it was going it would climb up a wall if it hit one before it could be bothered to come to a stop!

we used to love climbing the dirt piles in the middle of the roads every summer when they re-bladed/oiled the roads.. hehe

anyways, i bet this stupid kart went dam near half a mile across the field before we managed to get it stopped.. (And by we, i mean Dougy.. i wasnt chasin it for very long.. my leg hurt.. everyone else tired out.. good thing we had the little power house with us.. haha.. besides.. he pulled the rope so it was his fault.. haha)
