I am building a pretty cool go kart for my kid. It was just going to be a gravity racer type thing, but I kept getting carried away, making I quite a nice little car. Now I cant not let it have power. Not that I want speed, but just a nice jogging speed would be fine. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of room to work with. I am a long time body and paint guy with little experience in the mechanicals of this part of our project. Been trying to find a kit that has everything I need as a package. I've had no luck. Maybe someone can give me some good advice on what to use for dummies like me. I do know that I better have around 24 volt 1000 watt electric. Gas would be fine but without more space, I'm just wondering am I better off with an electric motor. Maybe gas is better with these little CC engines today. I wish I knew. Will someone please give me some more experienced advice? My son and I are at a stand still on this project and both are anxious to continue. I'm looking around 200.00 or so.

Thanks,
Dummy

Everyone raves about the Predator 212cc 6.5 hp engine sold by Harbor Freight. Usually on sale for $99.99, there's a $94.99 coupon floating around that will save you some money.

There's been several buy-it-now Evilbay auctions selling the same engines for $70 or thereabouts, if you're patient.

That is my recommendation for your powerplant.

He said he's already building a kart. And here you are basically telling him to ditch it and go for something pre-made. Where's the fun in that?

Well, it all comes down to gearing, and usually means a jackshaft. (Unless you go electric). But look at it this way: with all the horsepower, many common automobiles can break 100 mph. However, in low gear, not much above 30....

Whoop! There it is! Gear right, and walking speed is doable, then can be geared up later for butt puckering speed.

To go slow you want a 15-20:1 ratio.

Good advice.

The OP put in too much info that is semi-contradictory...and there's no photos. Since we are DIY'ers, my first inclination is to help solve the original issue instead of heading in a new direction, but anyway...

As you can see I don't have a bunch of space, but some. the rear trunk area is about 12 inches deep x 16 inches wide. Ill try to post more recent photos when able right now having problems with photos downloading.

Those pics worked fine. Nice Body. I do not see where you could put a motor on it though. :(
