I wanted to paint paint a couple of parts to match my HF Blue engine to make it look like it goes with my kart. Does anyone one know which paint matches or the paint code?

since there clones you wont find a colour code. Get some cheap paint in royal blue and that will be the closest you will get, but the cheap paint varies in colours of blue so much its very hard to find the same one. Look at the codes on the can and try to get a matching set if alot needs to be done. I hate using cheap paint (spray) but its the closest you will find to the original of anything made in china.

Take the cowling into the shop with you and try and get the closest colour, even if the colour is slightly off no one will notice, if it is noticeable you can just spray the cowling with it.

Thanks

most good hardware stores will colour match. bring the tank in or whatever you can take off thats the colour you want. go to the paint counter and have them colour match it. the downside is that you have to get house paint, but I'd think if you prep'd the frame properly and got a good quality exterior paint it should hold up fine. plus you could always buff out the brush marks and clear coat it.

ahh come on now, never use house paint on something that aint a house, main reason being it will not attach/stick. Spray shop will match or make one up for you.

Not so. With the metal properly prepped and primed, you can get your colour tinted into an exterior alkyd. Pour in a shot of japan dryer, knock it down with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, or one of several other higher grade solvents (NOT varsol), run it thru a strainer, load your favorite spray gun, and have at it. Every bit as good as Tremclad. And yes, I'm a painter.

Toystory, in California the alkyd paints are now a water base formula. Not sure where the OP lives but I messed up the first can of reformulated paint I bought, adding thinner. The upside is, I used to have problems with painter-helpers thinning latex or alkyd with the opposite thinner needed, now just give them water.

I agree, store-bought spraypaint will probably come "close enough" but if you want more variety than your local hardware store carries, try a larger auto parts store where they have a HUGE selection of different paints. Bring a piece of the engine with you as a sample, and know that nobody, but nobody has a listing for that paint; you'll have to match it up best possible or pay for a custom match at an automotive finish place. Many of these will make custom spraypaint cans for you! :idea2:

Don't make the paint too thick on hot parts of the engine, and let it run through at least one heat cycle and cool down before touching. I found out the hard way that the paint takes 3-d fingerprints the first time you run it.

Why don't you just get a blue you like and repaint the tank and engine parts at the same time? I'm planning on doing just that when I build my mini bike or quad.

Easy - I needed to do the same thing.

Krylon True Blue. I know Ace Hardware has it.

My frame and Harbor engine match pretty much perfectly. I keep a can handy for touch-ups too.

My 6.5 clone is red :(

Yeah well the red ones are the only clone manufacturers Honda goes after with law suits. That's why most diferent clone brands use any other color besides red nowadays. When clones first started out they were all painted red trying to work off Honda's brand recognition.

Are the yellow ones any different? I've seen them a bit on AGK. Are they better engines and that's why AGK has them for racing?

Yes- as you all know, yellow is a faster colour.
Sorry- couldn't resist. Actually, I was wondering the same thing myself. BSP's are yellow, too, aren't they?

That's why my kart is red. I said yellow was "faster", not fastest... ;)
Shall I take a picture of the Honda GX340 sticker on my recoil and send it to ya? LOL

Yes, I believe the yellow clone engines are higher quality than most other direct Honda copies. I posted a bit more info about them here in this thread: http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=10589

You guys would find tons of credible info comparing "yellow vs. blue clone" engines by entering that term into the search window at this forum: http://karting.4cycle.com/ (but you just gotta sigh up/register before you can use their search funtion)

agree, have only had bad experiances with things painted in house paint, seems to attract rust and enamels a challenge for the sandblaster, also agree with going into paintshop and matching unless you have the code ofcourse.
