Ok, since I have the driven side of a 20 series comet, and seeing as everyone still is out of stock for everything TC related.
I thought of a manual TC. Running a smallish pulley on the engine, and an idler pulley that would engage different ratios by tightening the belt. This would allow high RPM running in the lowest gear since it's a off road cart.
I see this working as the driven pulley is just opened by belt being pulled tighter when the driver pulley opens up. I would make some kind of lever that locked into like 4 different spots plus 1 idle.

It isn't supposed to be fast, I'm not looking at more then 20 mph.

Yes?
It's all I need to get my girlfriends cart running. I got my brake hooked up.

The only problem I see with this is having to drop it into neutral to stop or slow down.

if your only looking for 20, just make it a belt tensioner style clutch, 1 speed. you should have plenty of torque.

...why did I do that?

What might work, if you want an automatic, would be a spring on the lever with the idler pulley on it (the lever on the right), either pushing or pulling on it depending on how you mount it. You would no longer need the hand lever or the connecting rod. That spring would mimic the driver pulley function. You could have several mounting locations for the spring to change settings, much like changing the green, yellow, blue Comet springs.

Alternatively, you could insert a spring in the connection rod (the horizontal rod) to give a a multi-range-semi-automatic, you will still need a spring on the idler pulley lever for this to work. You would need to trial and error a lot on the spring types. It would be pretty cool.

When I was a kid, I woked on Motobecane mopeds. They had a driven pulley on a jackshaft, and the engine had a fixed pully. The engine was spring mounted on the top, and would rotate back and forth in respose to the driven pulley's motion. It worked, but those mopeds broke a lot.

well i don't know about tc's but the driven on my sled engne kart has a pretty stiff spring. it seems like it would take a lot of force to make the belt go lower.

Well, I can open the pulley with just a little bit of force on the tightest setting.
I'm going to experiment with this tomorrow, I've got a couple pulleys I can use and springs and stuff.

I also figured this would be too complicated for my girlfriend to worry about a manual clutch.

WISE FROM YOUR GWAVE!

Here's an update. I made my custom pulley to hold the size belt need to use with the driven unit.
Here's a mock up of how it will look, pics tomorrow as I build it.
